Federal Regulation of Pesticide Residues: A Brief History and Analysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
In the United States today, there are over 900 pesticides in use1 and over 400 are approved for use in food production, whether used as part of the growing process or in post-harvest handling. Although the history of pesticide use in food crops goes back

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Crop residues activity against the free-living stages of small ruminant nematodes

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Parasitologia Veterinária
The nematicidal effect of different organic materials was evaluated in order to develop a non-chemical alternative soil treatment for control of the free-living stages of small ruminant gastrointestinal nematodes.

ZnO/ionic liquid catalyzed biodiesel production from renewable and waste lipids as feedstocks [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
A new protocol for biodiesel production is proposed, based on a binary ZnO/TBAI (TBAI = tetrabutylammonium iodide) catalytic system. Zinc oxide acts as a heterogeneous, bifunctional Lewis acid/base catalyst, while TBAI plays the role of phase transfer ...

Bioeconomy in Textile Industry: Industrial Residues Valorization Toward Textile Functionalization

open access: yesRecycling
Industrial residues are sources of functional biopolymers with interesting properties for textile applications. This study aims to evaluate the impact of enzymatic pre-treatment on oil yield and phenolic compounds’ content in an aqueous extraction process, as well as the functional properties incorporated into textiles.

Inhibiting stearoyl‐CoA desaturase suppresses bone metastatic prostate cancer by modulating cellular stress, mTOR signaling, and DNA damage response

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Bone metastasis in prostate cancer (PCa) patients is a clinical hurdle due to the poor understanding of the supportive bone microenvironment. Here, we identify stearoyl‐CoA desaturase (SCD) as a tumor‐promoting enzyme and potential therapeutic target in bone metastatic PCa.
