Do public works programmes foster climate resilience? Conceptual framework and review of empirical evidence

open access: yesInternational Social Security Review, Volume 78, Issue 2-3, Page 145-171, April-September 2025.
Abstract Public works programmes (PWPs) are pervasively used to tackle poverty and unemployment, and to build infrastructure and skills in low‐ and middle‐income countries. While their impacts on poverty, food security and labour outcomes have been widely documented, there is little research focusing on the role of PWPs in supporting household climate ...

“We Are the Sons of Our Own Deeds”: Comparing Skeletal Health and Frailty Indices in Deceased Individuals Across 2000 Years of Milanese History

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Biological Anthropology, Volume 186, Issue 3, March 2025.
ABSTRACT Objectives In bioarchaeology, the concepts of resilience and frailty, and their quantification through indices, have gathered significant attention. This study is the first to apply, evaluate, and compare skeletal frailty indices and aims to trace frailty over time while identifying methodological challenges in their use on a sample ...

Two decades of arthropod biodiversity after windthrow show different dynamics of functional groups

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 2, Page 371-387, February 2025.
Our study shows that windthrow causes an initial boost of arthropod diversity. While abundances thereafter rapidly decline, species numbers remain at relatively high levels during at least two decades. Unsalvaged windthrows are an indispensable resource for endangered species, particularly in later wood decay stages.

Elevational ranges of pioneer marsh species are site specific and likely shaped by different abiotic and biotic factors

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 16, Issue 1, January 2025.
Abstract Salt marshes are dynamic systems whose landscape structure and resilience to disturbance depend on bio‐geomorphological interactions. The ecological niches of salt marsh plants are asserted to be organized along an elevational gradient, determining the impact of abiotic factors such as soil aeration, flooding, and salinity, which generate the ...
