The Ncm-1 gene for resistance to Cucumber mosaic virus in yellow lupin (Lupinus luteus): molecular studies and marker development [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) is an important virus pathogen of lupins in Australia which causes serious yield losses of up to 60% in epidemic years. In commercially grown lupin (Lupinus angustifolius and L.

Enteropathogenic E. coli shows delayed attachment and host response in human jejunum organoid‐derived monolayers compared to HeLa cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) infects the human intestinal epithelium, resulting in severe illness and diarrhoea. In this study, we compared the infection of cancer‐derived cell lines with human organoid‐derived models of the small intestine. We observed a delayed in attachment, inflammation and cell death on primary cells, indicating that host ...

Genetic control of Pyrenophora teres virulence to three barley accessions

open access: yesPlant Protection Science, 2002
Ascospore progeny of cross of Pyrenophora teres f. teres isolates was evaluated on virulence to three barley genotypes. Monogenic inheritance of virulence (26 a:17 v and 31 a:18 v) was shown to cultivar Harbin and accession c 21272 and supported by ...

Analysis of non-TIR NBS-LRR resistance gene analogs in Musa acuminata Colla: Isolation, RFLP marker development, and physical mapping [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Background Many commercial banana varieties lack sources of resistance to pests and diseases, as a consequence of sterility and narrow genetic background. Fertile wild relatives, by contrast, possess greater variability and represent potential sources of

Organoids in pediatric cancer research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Organoid technology has revolutionized cancer research, yet its application in pediatric oncology remains limited. Recent advances have enabled the development of pediatric tumor organoids, offering new insights into disease biology, treatment response, and interactions with the tumor microenvironment.

A new bacterial blight resistance gene Xa50(t) in the Xa4 locus confers resistance against Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae in rice

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science
Rice bacterial leaf blight (BB), caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo), leads to severe yield losses in rice. Resistance breeding is a sustainable approach to mitigate the impact of this disease. In this study, a novel BB resistance gene, Xa50(t),

Detection of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococci Isolated from Food Producing Animals: A Public Health Implication

open access: yesVeterinary Sciences, 2016
The emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in food animals is a potential public health concern. Staphylococci are a significant opportunistic pathogen both in humans and dairy cattle.

Broad spectrum late blight resistance in potato differential set plants MaR8 and MaR9 is conferred by multiple stacked R genes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Phytophthora infestans is the causal agent of late blight in potato. The Mexican species Solanum demissum is well known as a good resistance source. Among the 11 R gene differentials, which were introgressed from S.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

The bacterial phosphotransferase system-mediated rifampicin phosphorylation: ancestral links to rifampicin-inactivating enzyme

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology
IntroductionThe bacterial phosphotransferase system (PTS) transports and phosphorylates sugars. Some PTS proteins share structural motifs with rifampicin phosphotransferases (RPHs), which inactivate rifampicin by phosphorylation.
