Results from particle-resolved simulations

open access: yes, 2023
We review some of the results obtained to date with the aid of the PR-DNS approach to turbulent particulate flows. It is shown that the method has matured to a point which allows to apply it successfully to a wide variety of fluid/particle configurations, albeit still at a relatively large computational cost.

A conjugated heat and mass transfer model to implement reaction in particle-resolved CFD simulations of catalytic fixed bed reactors [PDF]

open access: yesEngineering Applications of Computational Fluid Mechanics, 2023
Modelling catalytic fixed bed reactors with a small tube-to-particle diameter ratio requires a detailed description of the interactions between fluid flow, intra-particle transport, and the chemical reaction(s) within the catalyst.

Settling of cohesive sediment: particle-resolved simulations [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Fluid Mechanics, 2018
We develop a physical and computational model for performing fully coupled, grain-resolved direct numerical simulations of cohesive sediment, based on the immersed boundary method. The model distributes the cohesive forces over a thin shell surrounding each particle, thereby allowing for the spatial and temporal resolution of the cohesive forces during

The contribution of plume-scale nucleation to global and regional aerosol and CCN concentrations: evaluation and sensitivity to emissions changes [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2014
We implement the Predicting Particles Produced in Power-Plant Plumes (P6) sub-grid sulphate parameterization for the first time into a global chemical-transport model with online aerosol microphysics, the GEOS-Chem-TOMAS model.

Bridging the Gaps: from Particle-resolved to Multi-tubular Reactor Simulation

open access: yesChemical Engineering Transactions, 2021
Packed bed reactors have been widely used in the chemical and process industry for several decades. They can be difficult to design and operate due to their size and complexity.

Particle‐resolved simulations of four‐way coupled, polydispersed, particle‐laden flows

open access: yesInternational Journal for Numerical Methods in Fluids, 2022
AbstractWe present a collocated‐grid framework for direct numerical simulations of polydisperse particles submerged in a viscous fluid. The fluid‐particle forces are coupled with the immersed boundary method (IBM) while the particle‐particle forces are modeled with a combination of contact and lubrication models, adapted for collocated grids.

Scattering asymmetry in in-situ Mie polarimetry diagnostic of nanodust clouds

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2023
Imaging Mie polarimetry is key to determining spatially resolved information about the properties, i.e. refractive index and grain size, of particle clouds, such as during the growth process in reactive particle producing plasmas.

Simulations of spin/polarization-resolved laser–plasma interactions in the nonlinear QED regime

open access: yesMatter and Radiation at Extremes, 2023
Strong-field quantum electrodynamics (SF-QED) plays a crucial role in ultraintense laser–matter interactions and demands sophisticated techniques to understand the related physics with new degrees of freedom, including spin angular momentum.
