Resource-Efficient Neural Architect

open access: yesCoRR, 2018
Neural Architecture Search (NAS) is a laborious process. Prior work on automated NAS targets mainly on improving accuracy, but lacks consideration of computational resource use. We propose the Resource-Efficient Neural Architect (RENA), an efficient resource-constrained NAS using reinforcement learning with network embedding. RENA uses a policy network

Design and analysis strategies for robust microbiome ageing research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The gut microbiome changes with age and associates with age‐related morbidity and mortality, establishing it as a potential biomarker and intervention target for ageing. Realising this potential requires methodological rigour, yet distinguishing biological signals from methodological artefacts remains challenging across cohorts. This review provides an

Non-target screening and laboratory experiments reveal the transformation products and negligible trifluoroacetic acid formation potential of PFAS pesticides and pharmaceuticals in wastewater treatment plants

open access: yesEnvironment International
The increasing use of fluorinated pesticides and pharmaceuticals has raised global concerns. Among them, substances containing –CF3 group are referred to as PFAS pesticides and pharmaceuticals (PFAS PPs) in this study and exhibit higher bioaccumulation ...

Dimethyl fumarate combined with cisplatin at subcytotoxic doses sensitizes cervical cancer toward ferroptosis and apoptosis through GSH restriction and p53 (re)activation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) reduces growth of HPV‐positive cervical cancer spheroids and induces ferroptosis in cervical cancer cells via blocking SLC7A11/Glutathione (GSH) axis. Combination of subcytotoxic doses of DMF and cisplatin (CDDP) further suppresses spheroid growth and drives cell death in 2D culture models.

Unveiling the unknown viral world in groundwater

open access: yesNature Communications
Viruses as the prevailing biological entities are poorly understood in underground realms. Here, we establish the first metagenomic Groundwater Virome Catalogue (GWVC) comprising 280,420 viral species ( ≥ 5 kb) detected from 607 monitored wells in seven ...

Resource use efficiency in agriculture

open access: yesAgricultural Systems, 1992
Abstract Trajectories over time of nitrogen use and yield show that the fertilizer is used as efficiently at the high end of the yield range, as at the low end. Apparently, any decrease in marginal returns as predicted by the law of diminishing returns is more or less compensated by the benefits of other technological changes.

Network divergence analysis identifies adaptive gene modules and two orthogonal vulnerability axes in pancreatic cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Tumors contain diverse cellular states whose behavior is shaped by context‐dependent gene coordination. By comparing gene–gene relationships across biological contexts, we identify adaptive transcriptional modules that reorganize into distinct vulnerability axes.

Quantitative investigation of moisture migration during microwave drying of coal slime dough through simulation and tracer analysis

open access: yesScientific Reports
Moisture migration during the microwave drying process of coal slime is critical for improving drying efficiency and reducing energy consumption. Nevertheless, current methods for quantifying these migration behaviors remain insufficient.

Pre‐analytical optimization of cell‐free DNA and extracellular vesicle‐derived DNA for mutation detection in liquid biopsies

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Pre‐analytical handling critically determines liquid biopsy performance. This study defines practical best‐practice conditions for cell‐free DNA (cfDNA) and extracellular vesicle–derived DNA (evDNA), showing how processing time, storage conditions, tube type, and plasma input volume affect DNA integrity and mutation detection.

Keratin 19 as a prognostic marker and contributing factor of metastasis and chemoresistance in high‐grade serous ovarian cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Keratin 19 (KRT19) is overexpressed in high‐grade serous ovarian cancer with high levels of Kallikrein‐related peptidases (KLK) 4–7 and is associated with poor survival. In vivo analyses demonstrate that elevated KRT19 increases peritoneal tumour burden.
