Direct readout of respiratory impedance
Medical & Biological Engineering, 1976Because the technique of forced oscillations requires little co-operation from the patient it is frequently employed in the diagnosis and treatment of respiratory diseases. To make routine use of this method possible, by medical researchers as well as clinicians, a special-purpose computer has been developed to determine those parameters of interest ...

Within-breath measurement of respiratory impedance
Physiological Measurement, 1993The measurement of the complex respiratory impedance at a high temporal resolution is described. The measurement of impedance is correlated with the breathing cycle using electrical transthoracic impedance. This allows the determination of the complex impedance at any fixed point in the respiratory cycle, which results in lower variability in the ...

Total respiratory impedance and early emphysema
European Respiratory Journal, 1993It can be postulated that patients in early stages of pulmonary emphysema have normal values of total respiratory resistance and reactance. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether pulmonary emphysema, detected functionally by a decrease of the single breath diffusing capacity (DLCO) by at least 25% of predicted, and an increase of the ...

Respiratory mechanical impedances. Methodology and interpretation
Biorheology, 1984A synthetic approach to lung and chest mechanics is to apply pressure variations to the respiratory system over a range of frequencies and to study the amplitude and phase relationships between applied pressure and resulting gas or tissue flow. Such impedance measurements may be performed in different ways, which are not equivalent: the most usual are ...

Total respiratory impedance in healthy children
Pediatric Pulmonology, 1985AbstractImpedance of the total respiratory system was measured in 121 healthy children aged 4–16 years during spontaneous breathing by pseudo‐random forced oscillations between 3 and 10 Hz. Total respiratory resistance (Rrs), inertance (Irs) and compliance (Crs) were determined by least‐mean‐squares fitting.

Respiratory input impedance measurement: Forced oscillation methods
Medical & Biological Engineering & Computing, 2001The paper reviews how forced oscillation techniques (FOT) for measuring respiratory input impedance Zrs,in have recently been used in clinical applications. Zrs,in is clinically relevant, as it provides data on both the resistive, Rrs, and nonresistive, Xrs, components of the respiratory system. Additionally, when excitatory test signals extending into

Modeling of respiratory system impedances in dogs
Journal of Applied Physiology, 1987Mechanical impedances between 4 and 64 Hz of the respiratory system in dogs have been reported (A.C. Jackson et al. J. Appl. Physiol. 57: 34–39, 1984) previously by this laboratory. It was observed that resistance (the real part of impedance) decreased slightly with frequency between 4 and 22 Hz then increased considerably with frequency above 22 Hz ...

Respiratory input impedance in anesthetized paralyzed patients
Journal of Applied Physiology, 1990Respiratory impedance (Zrs) was measured between 0.25 and 32 Hz in seven anesthetized and paralyzed patients by applying forced oscillation of low amplitude at the inlet of the endotracheal tube. Effective respiratory resistance (Rrs; in cmH2O.l-1.s) fell sharply from 6.2 +/- 2.1 (SD) at 0.25 Hz to 2.3 +/- 0.6 at 2 Hz.

Respiratory monitoring with a new impedance plethysmograph
Anaesthesia, 1986Summary A new impedance plethymograph respiratory monitor, (AR‐8800). was tested on anaesthetised dogs. Decreases in tidal volume and total apnoea were brought about by partial and complete airway obstruction and by partial and total muscle paralysis.

Parametric models for characterizing respiratory input impedance
Journal of Medical Engineering & Technology, 2008This study compares a manifold of parametric models reported in the literature with two novel parametric models for identifying human input respiratory impedance. The analysis is carried out on typical patient data obtained with the forced oscillations technique (FOT), on three sets of representative diagnosed subjects: healthy, asthma and COPD.
