Respiratory responses in reversible diaphragm paralysis
The effects of diaphragm paralysis on respiratory activity were assessed in 13 anesthetized, spontaneously breathing dogs studied in the supine position. Transient diaphragmatic paralysis was induced by bilateral phrenic nerve cooling. Respiratory activity was assessed from measurements of ventilation and from the moving time averages of electrical ...

Respiratory Management of Diaphragm Paralysis
Seminars in Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, 2002The diaphragm is the most important muscle of ventilation. Its contraction is key to the development of intrathoracic pressures. Diseases that affect diaphragmatic function result in decreased pressure-generating capacity by the respiratory muscles. If the involvement is severe or if there is underlying respiratory pathology, diaphragmatic paralysis ...

The treatment of acute polyradiculoneuritis with respiratory paralysis
Brain and Development, 1988This paper reports 504 cases admitted with acute polyradiculoneuritis (AP) to Beijing Children's Hospital from 1975 through 1984. 343 of the 504 cases (68.1%) with AP had respiratory paralysis and in 198/504 (39.3%), tracheotomy was performed. In this study, none of the patients received steroids.

Paralysis of ventilated newborn babies does not influence resistance of the total respiratory system [PDF]
Paralysis with pancuronium bromide is used in newborn infants to facilitate ventilatory support during respiratory failure. Changes in lung mechanics have been attributed to paralysis.
