Respiratory rate is a routine vital sign recorded on all patients, in addition to pulse rate, blood pressure, and temperature. Alveolar ventilation, a product of respiratory rate and tidal volume, is very tightly controlled by receptors in the respiratory center that is found in the medulla.

ABSTRACTA method is presented for recording breathing rate in the unrestrained rat. A thermocouple is implanted in the nose and the leads are externalized through a terminal implanted on the skull. The difference in temperature between inspired and expired air is taken as the measure of breathing.
