Respiratory syncytial virus under 2 years of age: hospitalization trends and risk factors for severe disease – preliminary data from the Portuguese sentinel network

open access: yesPortuguese Journal of Pediatrics
Introduction and Objectives: Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) infection is an important cause of hospitalization in children under five years. A national RSV sentinel network was set up in Portugal in April 2021.

Respiratory syncytial virus glycoproteins uptake occurs through clathrin-mediated endocytosis in a human epithelial cell line

open access: yesVirology Journal, 2008
Cell-surface viral proteins most frequently enter the cell through clathrin or caveolae endocytosis. Respiratory syncytial virus antigen internalization by immune cells is via caveolin, however, uptake of paramyxovirus cell membrane proteins by non ...

Respiratory Syncytial Virus Fusion Protein Promotes TLR-4–Dependent Neutrophil Extracellular Trap Formation by Human Neutrophils

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
Acute viral bronchiolitis by Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is the most common respiratory illness in children in the first year of life. RSV bronchiolitis generates large numbers of hospitalizations and an important burden to health systems ...

Vaccination in dermatology 2025: Update considering current recommendations of the German Standing Committee on Vaccination

open access: yesJDDG: Journal der Deutschen Dermatologischen Gesellschaft, EarlyView.
Summary The immunosuppressive and immunomodulatory treatment of dermatological patients necessitates the regular review and updating of standard vaccinations and vaccines indicated for specific conditions. The German Standing Committee on Vaccination (STIKO) at the Robert Koch Institute regularly publishes evidence‐based vaccination recommendations ...

Respiratory admissions and impact of COVID‐19 lockdowns for children with severe cerebral palsy

open access: yesDevelopmental Medicine &Child Neurology, EarlyView.
In a population cohort of children with severe cerebral palsy, there was a reduced frequency of hospitalization for respiratory illness during periods of restricted social contact, implemented to reduce transmission of COVID‐19. This mirrored trends in the wider population and underlines the importance of community viral transmission in these children.

Viral etiology in infants hospitalized for acute bronchiolitis

open access: yesThe Turkish Journal of Pediatrics, 2014
Acute bronchiolitis is predominantly a viral disease. Respiratory syncytial virus is the most common agent, but other newly identified viruses have also been considered as causes.

Recurrent c.‐11C>T change located upstream of the normal ATG initiation codon of ANKH causes self‐limited familial infantile epilepsy

open access: yesEpilepsia, EarlyView.
Abstract Objective Pathogenic ANKH variants are a known cause of chondrocalcinosis (Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man [OMIM] #118600) and craniometaphyseal dysplasia (OMIM #123000). Here, we describe the phenotype and genotype of autosomal dominant infantile epilepsy caused by a c.‐11C>T change upstream of the gene's normal ATG initiation codon of ...

Should We Advance Our Understanding of Immunoglobulin E in Viral Immunity?

open access: yesImmunology, EarlyView.
Immunoglobulin E has been extensively studied in allergies and parasitic diseases. Antigen‐specific IgE has been identified as part of the humoral response to viruses. This revision speculates on possible functionalities for IgE, such as neutralisation, cytotoxicity and immunopathology of viral diseases, and provide insights about gaps to fill in ...
