Simulation of a surface spill of different diesel/biodiesel mixtures in an ultisol, using natural attenuation and bioaugmentation/biostimulation

open access: yesAnais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências
Accidents caused by leaks and/or spills on soils need to be addressed. Natural attenuation, biostimulation and bioaugmentation can be useful bioremediation strategies for decontamination processes in soils of diesel/biodiesel mixtures.

Corticosterone and Mitochondrial Efficiency Are Associated With Changes in DNA Oxidative Damage During an Acute Stress Response in Leach's Storm‐Petrels (Hydrobates leucorhous)

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Zoology Part A: Ecological and Integrative Physiology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The ability of organisms to effectively respond to challenges is critical for survival. We investigated how an acute stressor affected corticosterone, mitochondrial function, and DNA oxidative damage in a wild population of Leach's storm‐petrels (Hydrobates leucorhous).

An insight into soil bioremediation through respirometry

open access: yesEnvironment International, 2005
Respirometric tests on a soil contaminated by crude oil were performed. Continuous measurements of oxygen and carbon dioxide concentrations and temperature in the soil atmosphere resulted in a large volume of data. Time series and system identification theories were used to analyze data as a biological signal, allowing us to detect some particularities

Evaluating the Air Respiratory Capacity of Awaous (Chonophorus) tajasica (Gobiiformes: Oxudercidae): A Morpho‐Functional Study

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Zoology Part A: Ecological and Integrative Physiology, EarlyView.
We demonstrated that Awaous tajasica performs facultative air breathing under experimental conditions of dissolved oxygen limitation, retaining air bubbles in the buccal cavity during gill ventilation. Morpho‐functional evidence indicates the use of atmospheric oxygen as a respiratory support under conditions of low water oxygenation.

Rumen methanogenic archaea and their correlation with enteric methane emission in ruminant animals: A systematic review and meta‐analysis

open access: yesJSFA reports, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Livestock, especially ruminants, are a major source of global methane emissions, primarily produced by methanogenic archaea during enteric fermentation. We performed a systematic review and meta‐analysis to account for factors that could influence the relationship between ruminal methanogenic populations and methane emissions, such ...

Water temperature, body mass and fasting heat production of pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus)

open access: yesAnais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências
Knowledge on fasting heat production (HEf) of fish is key to develop bioenergetics models thus improving feeding management of farmed species. The core of knowledge on HEf of farmed, neotropical fish is scarce. This study assessed the effect of body mass
