An insight into soil bioremediation through respirometry

open access: yesEnvironment International, 2005
Respirometric tests on a soil contaminated by crude oil were performed. Continuous measurements of oxygen and carbon dioxide concentrations and temperature in the soil atmosphere resulted in a large volume of data. Time series and system identification theories were used to analyze data as a biological signal, allowing us to detect some particularities

Corals and Reef‐Dwelling Fish Regulate Carbon Storage and Cycling Processes in Coral Reef Ecosystems

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Coral reefs are biodiversity hotspots, yet their role in carbon storage and cycling remains poorly understood. Using field surveys and modeling in the South China Sea, we reveal the overlooked potential of carbon storage in reef ecosystems and how reef fish, corals, and surface sediment jointly shape reef carbon reservoirs.

Erythropoietin receptor regulates tumor mitochondrial biogenesis through iNOS and pAKT

open access: yesFrontiers in Oncology, 2022
Erythropoietin receptor (EPOR) is widely expressed in healthy and malignant tissues. In certain malignancies, EPOR stimulates tumor growth. In healthy tissues, EPOR controls processes other than erythropoiesis, including mitochondrial metabolism.

Isolation of Intact Mitochondria from Skeletal Muscle by Differential Centrifugation for High-resolution Respirometry Measurements.

open access: yes, 2017
Mitochondria are involved in cellular energy metabolism and use oxygen to produce energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Differential centrifugation at low- and high-speed is commonly used to isolate mitochondria from tissues and cultured ...

Adipocyte Myoglobin Is a Determinant of Energy Expenditure and a Potential Target to Limit Obesity

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Myoglobin, known as a muscle oxygen‐carrying protein, is shown to play a key role in fat cells that burn energy. Loss of myoglobin reduces the body's ability to generate heat and increases obesity risk, while restoring it improves metabolism. The study identifies myoglobin as a regulator of fat burning and a potential target to enhance energy ...

Inferring Whole-Organism Metabolic Rate From Red Blood Cells in Birds

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2021
Metabolic rate is a key ecological variable that quantifies the energy expenditure needed to fuel almost all biological processes in an organism. Metabolic rates are typically measured at the whole-organism level (woMR) with protocols that can elicit ...

Partitional Respirometry in Cardio-pulmonary Disease [PDF]

open access: yesThorax, 1959
Respiratory disorders cannowbeclassified by theaveragelaboratory asprimary defects of respiratory mechanics orofgasuptake, andthe verdict isaccepted withreasonable confidence. However, further classification ofdisordered gas uptake isstill a tedious anduncertain business.

Computational tools for inversion and uncertainty estimation in respirometry

open access: yesPLOS ONE, 2021
In many physiological systems, real-time endogeneous and exogenous signals in living organisms provide critical information and interpretations of physiological functions; however, these signals or variables of interest are not directly accessible and must be estimated from noisy, measured signals.

Classifying avian drinking behaviour: ecological insights and implications in a changing world

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Water is a fundamental currency of life, and its availability significantly influences animal behaviour, physiology and distributions. However, our knowledge around the dependence on water for drinking and the direct and indirect mechanisms driving related behaviours remains partial in the context of changing climates. Here, we review patterns
