Seasonal effects of farmer-managed livestock grazing exclusions on bird communities in Burkina Faso. [PDF]
Abstract Anthropogenic activities such as livestock grazing and deforestation are primary causes of land degradation in drylands such as the Sahel Zone of Africa, threatening the livelihoods of rural communities and biodiversity. To restore degraded habitats, measures such as farmer‐managed livestock grazing exclusion, where the native vegetation is ...

Exposure of wetlands important for nonbreeding waterbirds to sea-level rise in the Mediterranean. [PDF]
Abstract Sea‐level rise (SLR) is expected to cause major changes to coastal wetlands, which are among the world's most vulnerable ecosystems and are critical for nonbreeding waterbirds. Because strategies for adaptation to SLR, such as nature‐based solutions and designation of protected areas, can locally reduce the negative effects of coastal flooding

Savannas cover one‐fifth of the Earth's surface, harbour substantial biodiversity, and provide a broad range of ecosystem services to hundreds of millions of people. The community composition of trees in tropical moist forests varies with climate, but whether the same processes structure communities in disturbance‐driven savannas remains relatively ...

Migrating bars influence the formation and dynamics of their peers in large sandy‐gravel bed rivers
This study investigates the interactions between migrating bars in a sandy gravel river (Loire River, France). We analysed the deflection power exerted by bars on flow and sediment transport that influences the dynamics of other bars present in the channel. We also investigated the role of low flows in bar formation and migration.

Global historical trends and drivers of submerged aquatic vegetation quantities in lakes
Submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) in lake littoral zones provide many ecosystem services, but what are the trends and drivers of SAV quantities globally? SAV quantities are predominantly decreasing due to land use change with increasing trends being more recent and associated with management and invasive species.

Abstract To document and halt biodiversity loss, monitoring, quantifying trends and assessing management and conservation strategies on wildlife populations and communities are crucial steps. With increasing technological innovations, more and more data are collected and new quantitative methods are constantly developed.

Allis shad Alosa alosa hatches and develops in freshwater before migrating to the sea during its first months of life. Some field research works dedicated to the diet of the species in freshwater put forward that young stages of allis shad feed mainly on zooplankton, being opportunistic and euryphagous; their diet would diversify through ontogeny in ...

Syntheses clearly show that global warming is affecting ecosystems and biodiversity around the world. New methods and measures are needed to predict the climate resilience of plant species critical to ecosystem stability, to improve ecological management and to support habitat restoration and human well‐being.

Crickets as indicators of ecological succession in tropical systems, New Caledonia
Cricket species assemblages showed a clear response to ecological succession from shrubland to forest in New Caledonia with the highest and lowest species richness and abundances of individuals respectively found in forest and shrubland. Species specialization revealed conservation value of each succession stage including shrubland.

Well grounded: Indigenous Peoples' knowledge, ethnobiology and sustainability
Abstract The biological knowledge and associated values and beliefs of Indigenous and other long‐resident Peoples are often overlooked and underrepresented in governance, planning and decision‐making at local, regional, national and international levels.
