Energy conservation in the retail sector

A survey of 638 randomly selected retail establishments was undertaken in Florida during the Summer of 1977. Data were collected about temperature and lighting levels and also executive attitudes about energy conservation. Analysis of survey data indicates the proportion of establishments outside Federal temperature and lighting guidelines.

A study is reported of West Edmonton Mall and Gateshead Metro Centre; the two shopping centres that are, respectively, the largest in the world and the largest in Europe. Examination of the background to the two developments reveals that public sector inputs to these “entrepreneurial” developments have been substantial.
