Techniques for Determining Retained Austenite

AM&P Technical Articles, 2022
Abstract Accurate measurement of retained austenite levels is important in the development and control of a heat treatment process.

Retained Austenite and the Tempering of Martensite

Nature, 1960
THE decomposition of retained austenite as the second stage in the tempering of quenched steels is well recognized, and has been explored extensively. However, the role of retained austenite in the first stage tempering reaction has not been studied widely.

Transformation microyielding of retained austenite

Acta Metallurgica, 1989
Abstract The reversal in the temperature dependence of the elastic limit accurately determines the Mσs temperature of retained austenite in 4340 steel. Two models, one based on an exponential distribution of pre-existing nucleation sites and another based on an autocatalytic-site potency distribution, were compared in predicting the constitutive ...

A study of the carbon distribution in retained austenite

Scripta Materialia, 2007
Cold-rolled and annealed transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) steels were overaged to modify the carbon concentrations (Cγ) in retained austenite. Experimental Cγ values were directly obtained by electron energy loss spectroscopy and compared with data derived from X-ray diffraction measurements of the austenite lattice parameter (aγ). In this way,

Retained Austenite

1999
Abstract This chapter addresses the issue of retained austenite in quenched carburized steels. It explains why retained austenite can be expected at the surface of case-hardened components, how to estimate the amount that will be present, and how to effectively stabilize or otherwise control it. It presents detailed images and data plots

Determination of retained austenite in bearing steel

Hyperfine Interactions, 1986
Mőssbauer effect experiments in scattering geometry were performed for gauging plates and bearings in order to measure the retained austenite content. The results, obtained from numerical calculations of Mossbauer spectra are compared with the X-ray diffraction measurements.

Modelling of retained austenite in carburized layers

Journal de Physique IV, 2004
In this paper, modelling of the phase composition of the carburized case produced on steel alloys containing chromium, manganese and nickel will be discussed. In particular, the effect of steel composition on the amount of retained austenite and carbide structure will be discussed.

X-ray determination of retained austenite

Journal of Heat Treating, 1981
The variation of retained austenite content in heat treated steels is studied here by an X-ray diffraction technique. It is found that the retained austenite content in steel samples studied increases with the austenitizing temperature and decreases slowly with the tempering temperature up to 177 °C.
