The role of ausforming in the stability of retained austenite in a medium-C carbide-free bainitic steel

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology, 2020
In this work, the influence of thermomechanical treatments, consisting of a combination of ausforming followed by isothermal holding and cooling to room temperature, on the stability of retained austenite of a carbide-free medium carbon-high silicon ...

Retained austenite and tempered martensite embrittlement [PDF]

open access: yesMetallurgical Transactions A, 1978
The problems of detecting the distribution of small amounts (5 pct or less) of retained austenite films around the martensite in quenched and tempered experimental medium carbon Fe/c/x steels are discussed and electron optical methods of analysis are emphasized. These retained austenite films if stable seem to be beneficial to fracture toughness.

The Role of Retained Austenite in Tempered Martensite Embrittlement of 4340 and 300-M Steels Investigated through Rapid Tempering

open access: yesMetals, 2021
Tempered martensite embrittlement (TME) is investigated in two medium carbon, high strength steels, 4340 (low silicon) and 300-M (high silicon), via rapid (1, 10, or 100 s) and conventional (3600 s) tempering. Rapid tempering of 4340 diminishes the depth

Effect of Metallographic Sample Preparation Processes on Retained Austenite Volume Fraction in Quenched AISI 52100 Steel

open access: yesGazi Üniversitesi Fen Bilimleri Dergisi, 2020
Sample preparation is one of the main steps in metallographic examinations and the sample preparation processes give rise to changes in the determination of volume fraction of any phases can cause failure at the interpretation of a study.

Microstructure-Properties Relationship and Mechanical Stability of Retained Austenite in Thermomechanically Processed Medium-C TRIP Steel at Different Deformation Temperatures [PDF]

open access: yesArchives of Metallurgy and Materials, 2020
The paper presents the effect of deformation temperature on the mechanical stability of retained austenite in a multiphase TRIP steel. Series of static tensile tests were carried out in the temperature range –20 to 140°C in order to simulate the ...

Austenite formation from a steel microstructure containing martensite/austenite and bainite bands

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology, 2023
In many commercial steel processing routes, steel microstructures are reverted to an austenitic condition prior to the final processing steps. Understanding the microstructure development during austenitization is crucial for improving the performance ...

Characterization of Retained Austenite in Advanced High-Strength Steel

open access: yesScanning, 2023
The retained austenite (RA) in advanced high-strength steels directly affects their plasticity. It is very important for the accurate characterization of their content and types. This paper prepared three specimens with three different Mn contents (1.0%, 1.4%, and 1.7%) that are used to obtain high-strength steel by ultrafast cooling heat treatment ...

A theoretical review of the operation of vibratory stress relief with particular reference to the stabilization of large-scale fabrications

open access: yes, 2011
Vibratory stress relief (VSR) is widely used on large welded fabrications to stabilize the structures so that they do not distort during further machining or during operational duty.

Enabling bainitic transformation acceleration and mechanical properties improvement in ultrafine bainitic steel

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology
A novel approach involving the fast heating of cold-rolled pearlite followed by low-temperature isothermal transformation (FBT) was devised to address the technical challenges of long processing times and strength-ductility trade-off in ultrafine ...
