Austenite formation and cementite dissolution during intercritical annealing of a medium-manganese steel from a martensitic condition

open access: yesMaterials & Design, 2021
In the present study, in situ high-energy X-ray diffraction (HEXRD), dilatometry, and metallography were conducted for the purpose of understanding microstructure evolution during intercritical annealing of a Fe-0.19C-4.39Mn steel from a martensitic ...

Fostering Innovation: Streamlining Magnetocaloric Materials Research by Digitalization

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Magnetocaloric cooling (MCE) is an environmentally friendly refrigeration method with great potential. Optimizing MCE materials involves the preparation and screening of large quantities of samples, which in turn generates a large amount of data. A digitalization approach is presented that uses ontologies, knowledge graphs, and digital workflows to ...

Study of retained austenite on pivots in 17NiCrMoS6-4

open access: yes, 2023
reservedL’obiettivo della tesi consiste nel verificare che i perni, componenti caratterizzanti di un assale, contengano austenite residua, quantificare tale materiale e confrontare la percentuale di austenite residua ottenuta mediante l’analisi ...

The Mossbauer spectroscopy studies of retained austenite

open access: yes, 2021
Purpose: of this paper: This paper completes the knowledge concerning the mechanisms of destabilization and properties of retained austenite. Investigations were performed on 120MnCrMoV8-6-4-2 steel, which was designed in 1998, in Phase Transformations Research Group of Department of Physical and Powder Metallurgy at the Faculty of Metals Engineering ...

Effect of Intercritical Annealing Parameters and Starting Microstructure on the Microstructural Evolution and Mechanical Properties of a Medium-Mn Third Generation Advanced High Strength Steel

open access: yesMetals, 2022
A prototype medium-Mn TRIP steel (0.2 C–6 Mn–1.7 Si–0.4 Al–0.5 Cr (wt %)) with a cold-rolled tempered martensite (CR) and martensitic (M) starting microstructures was subjected to continuous galvanizing line (CGL) compatible heat treatments. It was found

Quenching and Partitioning of Multiphase Aluminum-Added Steels

open access: yesMetals, 2019
The quenching and partitioning response following intercritical annealing was investigated for three lean TRIP-type high-Al steel compositions. Depending on the intercritical austenite fraction following annealing, the steels assumed either a ferrite ...

High‐Temperature Nanoindentation of Metals: Assessing Thermal Drift, Frame Compliance, and Chemical Composition Effects on the Reported Mechanical Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Do not let thermal drift and instrument artifacts deceive high‐temperature nanoindentation results. We compare classical Oliver–Pharr and automatic image recognition analyses across steels and a Ni alloy to quantify these effects. Accounting for artifacts reveals systematic softening with temperature, while Cr and Ni additions boost resistance ...

Controlling the work hardening of martensite to increase the strength/ductility balance in quenched and partitioned steels

open access: yesMaterials & Design, 2017
The role of retained austenite on tensile behavior in quenched and partitioned (Q&P) steels has been studied extensively, but the deformation behavior of martensite, which comprises the majority of Q&P microstructures, has received less attention.

Recycling of NiTi Shape Memory Alloys: Fundamental and Technological Aspects of a Vacuum Induction Melting Processing Route

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The present study investigates recycling of NiTi shape memory alloys via vacuum induction melting. An ingot was synthesized from elemental Ni and Ti and subjected to three subsequent remelting cycles. Remelting increases process durations and impurity levels and adversely affects microstructures and functional properties.
