Novel Bioconjugate Materials: Synthesis, Characterization and Medical Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This review discusses the bioconjugation of novel materials grouped under “biological”, “hybrid” and “synthetic” categories. Medical applications ranging from cancer therapy and diagnostics to optogenetics and tissue engineering are explored, and conjugation trends are highlighted as a general guide. The review concludes with a comparison of techniques

Cell Calcification Models and Their Implications for Medicine and Biomaterial Research

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Calcification, is the process by which the tissues containing minerals are formed, occurring during normal physiological processes, or in pathological conditions. Here, it is aimed to give a comprehensive overview of the range of cell models available, and the approaches taken by these models, highlighting when and how methodological divergences arise,

Generation, transcriptome profiling, and functional validation of cone-rich human retinal organoids

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, 2019
Significance Rods and cones are photoreceptor cells with different distributions and functions in the human retina. Rods are dominant at the periphery, which is responsible for peripheral vision; cones are enriched in the macula, which is responsible for

Optimization of the Nonclinical Biological Evaluation of Medical Devices Using Toxicologic Pathology Best Practices

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Nonclinical evaluation of biological responses to implanted medical devices and combination products in animals is required to predict possible outcomes and risks in patients. This paper describes globally accepted pathology “best practices” that 1) effectively address ISO standards and current regulatory guidance for medical device development and 2 ...

Biochemical adaptations of the retina and retinal pigment epithelium support a metabolic ecosystem in the vertebrate eye

open access: yesbioRxiv, 2017
Here we report multiple lines of evidence for a comprehensive model for retinal energy metabolism. Metabolic flux, locations of key enzymes and our finding that glucose enters the neural retina almost entirely through photoreceptors support a ...
