Case Report: Multiple Retinal Astrocytic Hamartomas in Congenital Disorder of Glycosylation-Ia

open access: yesFrontiers in Medicine, 2022
Congenital disorder of glycosylation-Ia (CDG-Ia) is a rare autosomal recessive genetic disorder, characterized by systemic and ophthalmological abnormalities.

Differential intensity contrast swept source optical coherence tomography for human retinal vasculature visualization [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
We demonstrate an intensity-based motion sensitive method, called differential logarithmic intensity variance (DLOGIV), for 3D microvasculature imaging and foveal avascular zone (FAZ) visualization in the in vivo human retina using swept source optical ...

The role and implications of mammalian cellular circadian entrainment

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
At their most fundamental level, mammalian circadian rhythms occur inside every individual cell. To tell the correct time, cells must align (or ‘entrain’) their circadian rhythm to the external environment. In this review, we highlight how cells entrain to the major circadian cues of light, feeding and temperature, and the implications this has for our

CDK11 inhibition induces cytoplasmic p21WAF1 splice variant by p53 stabilisation and SF3B1 inactivation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
CDK11 inhibition stabilises the tumour suppressor p53 and triggers the production of an alternative p21WAF1 splice variant p21L, through the inactivation of the spliceosomal protein SF3B1. Unlike the canonical p21WAF1 protein, p21L is localised in the cytoplasm and has reduced cell cycle‐blocking activity.

Wide-field imaging of sickle retinopathy

open access: yesInternational Journal of Retina and Vitreous, 2019
Background Wide-field imaging is a newer retinal imaging technology, capturing up to 200 degrees of the retina in a single photograph. Individuals with sickle cell retinopathy commonly exhibit peripheral retinal ischemia.

Design and Simulation of an Ultra-Wide Field Optical Coherence Tomography Retinal Imaging System

open access: yesPhotonics, 2021
Peripheral retinal imaging is a unique approach for assessing and monitoring ocular diseases. In this paper, we proposed a design for an optical coherence tomography system to accomplish ultrawide field (>120°) retinal imaging without montages.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Non-viral delivery and optimized optogenetic stimulation of retinal ganglion cells led to behavioral restoration of vision [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Stimulation of retinal neurons using optogenetics via use of chanelrhodopsin-2 (ChR2) has opened up a new direction for restoration of vision for treatment of retinitis pigmentosa (RP).
