An eye on long‐duration spaceflight: Controversies, countermeasures and challenges

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Space flight‐associated neuroocular syndrome (SANS) is a consequence of long‐duration space flight and is detected in two‐thirds of astronauts. In‐flight, this can cause a change in the refraction of the eyes, requiring graded hypermetropic ‘superfocus adjustable’ glasses, optic nerve head oedema and choroidal folds.

Thrombus and branch retinal vein occlusion [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) is often associated with arteriosclerosis. Typically the occlusion occurs at an arteriovenous crossing. We report a case of a previously healthy patient who developed a BRVO.

DELP Treatment on Vision and Retinal Microcirculation in Patients With Acute Ischemic Stroke: Report of Five Cases and Literature Review

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, Volume 30, Issue 2, Page 168-175, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Background The delipid extracorporeal lipoprotein filter from plasma (DELP) treatment can effectively reduce blood lipid, increase blood flow, and improve neurological deficits in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). However, its effect on vision and retinal microcirculation in stroke patients has never been reported.

Long-term management of non-ischemic central retinal vein occlusion with fluocinolone acetonide intravitreal implant 190 μg (ILUVIEN®)

open access: yesTherapeutic Advances in Ophthalmology, 2019
Introduction: Macular edema after central retinal vein occlusion is a common cause of vision loss. Upregulation of vascular endothelial growth factor and higher levels of inflammatory mediators have been involved in the pathogeny of the macular edema in ...

Association of Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography of Collaterals in Retinal Vein Occlusion With Major Venous Outflow Through the Deep Vascular Complex

open access: yesJAMA ophthalmology, 2018
Importance Analysis of collateral vessel formation following retinal vein occlusion may advance our understanding of the venous outflow anatomy in the macula.

EHD4 and ASAP2 are critical negative regulators of the claudin‐5‐based endothelial barrier

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, Volume 293, Issue 7, Page 2067-2085, April 2026.
Cell‐surface CLDN‐5 protein levels can be evaluated using a probe that can bind to the extracellular domains of CLDN‐5. A probe derived from Clostridium perfringens enterotoxin allows us to isolate cells with high CLDN‐5 protein levels from a knockout cell library.

A computational model for retinal haemodynamics under gravitational and postural variations

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, Volume 604, Issue 7, Page 2698-2716, 1 April 2026.
Abstract figure legend The haemodynamic impact of gravitational and postural changes on the retina, and its relevance to spaceflight associated neuro‐ocular syndrome (SANS), remains incompletely characterized. This study assesses retinal haemodynamics from upright to head‐down tilt using a lumped‐parameter model that dynamically couples intraocular ...

Retinal Microvasculature and Visual Acuity in Eyes With Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion: Imaging Analysis by Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography.

open access: yesInvestigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science, 2017
Purpose To investigate microvascular changes in the superficial capillary plexus (SCP) and deep capillary plexus (DCP) in eyes with resolved branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) and their association with best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA).

Role of Transthoracic Echocardiography in the Evaluation of Patients with Retinal Vein Occlusion [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Cardio-Thoracic Medicine, 2014
Introduction: Retinal vein occlusion  is a common vascular disorder disrupting vision. Two basic types of RVO are branch retinal vein occlusion and central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO).  Retinal vein occlusion is a multifactor process including systemic
