Calpain‐2‐Mediated Endothelial Focal Adhesion Disruption in Thoracic Aortic Dissection

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The elevated expression of Capn2 in endothelial cells activates focal adhesion signaling by cleaving Talin1 and assembling Itgav, which compromises the integrity of the endothelial barrier and induces vascular inflammation. Inhibition of calpain through both pharmacological and transgenic approaches has effectively suppressed the onset and progression ...

Kearns‐Sayre syndrome case. Novel 5,9 kb mtDNA deletion

open access: yesMolecular Genetics &Genomic Medicine, Volume 11, Issue 1, January 2023., 2023
Novel 5,9 kb mtDNA deletion was identified for a 20‐year‐old male who presented with classic Kearns‐Sayre syndrome. Different molecular genetic methods were applied to identify the mitochondrial DNA deletion, but obtaining conflicting research results demonstrated the importance of choosing relevant molecular genetic methods. Abstract Background Kearns‐

Looking into Concept Explanation Methods for Diabetic Retinopathy Classification [PDF]

open access: yesMachine.Learning.for.Biomedical.Imaging. 2 (2024)
Diabetic retinopathy is a common complication of diabetes, and monitoring the progression of retinal abnormalities using fundus imaging is crucial. Because the images must be interpreted by a medical expert, it is infeasible to screen all individuals with diabetes for diabetic retinopathy.

Transfer Learning for Retinal Vascular Disease Detection: A Pilot Study with Diabetic Retinopathy and Retinopathy of Prematurity [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2022
Retinal vascular diseases affect the well-being of human body and sometimes provide vital signs of otherwise undetected bodily damage. Recently, deep learning techniques have been successfully applied for detection of diabetic retinopathy (DR). The main obstacle of applying deep learning techniques to detect most other retinal vascular diseases is the ...

A Touch Enabled Hemodynamic and Metabolic Monitor

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This work presents a touch‐based hybrid platform for simultaneous monitoring of vital signs and sweat metabolites. With a simple tri‐finger touch of 4–6 min, users can concurrently get to know their glucose, uric acid, cortisol levels from fingertip sweat, along with blood pressure and heart rate.

Explainable and Interpretable Diabetic Retinopathy Classification Based on Neural-Symbolic Learning [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2022
In this paper, we propose an explainable and interpretable diabetic retinopathy (ExplainDR) classification model based on neural-symbolic learning. To gain explainability, a highlevel symbolic representation should be considered in decision making. Specifically, we introduce a human-readable symbolic representation, which follows a taxonomy style of ...
