Retinyl esters in the vertebrate neuroretina
American Journal of Physiology-Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology, 1989High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was employed to measure retinyl esters in the vertebrate retina. Both retina and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) from frog, chicken, and bovine eyes were studied. In comparison to the RPE, the retina possessed a significant level of 11-cis and all trans retinyl palmitate.

Retinyl esterase activity of purified rat liver retinyl ester lipoprotein complex
Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 1979Abstract Retinyl ester lipoprotein complex from rat liver was shown to possess a retinyl esterase activity toward its own ligand complement. In the presence of serum albumin the retinyl esterase activity at 30 °C was about fivefold larger than the activity at 4 °C, while higher temperatures than 30 °C led to some degradation of retinyl compounds. Retinyl Esters Are the Substrate for Isomerohydrolase
Biochemistry, 2003Regeneration of 11-cis retinal from all-trans retinol in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is a critical step in the visual cycle. The enzyme(s) involved in this isomerization process has not been identified and both all-trans retinol and all-trans retinyl esters have been proposed as the substrate.

Retinyl ester hydrolases in retinal pigment epithelium
Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 1991In bovine retinal pigment epithelium membranes we have found three hydrolases which were active against trans-retinyl palmitate. This was possible by assaying different subcellular fractions as a function of pH in the range 3-9. Detection of these activities has been favored by the use in the enzyme assay of Triton X-100, which has an activating effect
