Arteriography of Retroperitoneal Masses
Radiology, 1973Fifty-six cases of retroperitoneal masses were studied arteriographically. The vast majority showed displacement of major arteries and the organs which they supply. Hypervascular masses were, with rare exceptions, malignant. Both malignant and benign hypovascular or avascular masses were found.

Imaging of Uncommon Retroperitoneal Masses
RadioGraphics, 2011Retroperitoneal masses not arising from major solid organs are uncommon. Although there is no simple method of classifying retroperitoneal masses, a reasonable approach is to consider the masses as predominantly solid or cystic and to subdivide these into neoplastic and nonneoplastic masses.

Retroperitoneal varices simulating masses
Gastrointestinal Radiology, 1982Retroperitoneal varices in portal hypertension may simulate the appearance of neoplastic masses or adenopathy. Contrast-enhanced CT scans clarify the diagnosis of large vascular channels. Three patients with large retroperitoneal varices demonstrated on CT had confirmation by angiography.

Angiography of nonneoplastic retroperitoneal masses
Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology, 1982Although noninvasive imaging modalities can be used to initially detect retroperitoneal masses, angiography is still desirable for several reasons in those cases in which surgery is contemplated. The latter can forewarn the surgeon as to possible hemorrhagic complications in highly vascular lesions.
