Toward a combined system of forward osmosis and reverse osmosis for seawater desalination
Desalination, 2009Abstract Forward osmosis (FO) is an osmotic process that uses a semi-permeable membrane to effect separation of water from dissolved solutes by an osmotic pressure gradient. Unlike reverse osmosis (RO), FO does not require high pressure for separation, allowing low energy consumption to produce water.

Experimental and theoretical work on reverse osmosis - Dual stage pressure retarded osmosis hybrid system [PDF]
Two-pass reverse osmosis desalination is a common process to treat high-salinity feed solution and provides a low-salinity permeate solution. This study investigated the significance of the energy generated by the dual-stage pressure retarded osmosis ...

Modeling of reverse osmosis systems
Desalination, 2003Abstract The Basrah University reverse osmosis plant (BURO) is an experimental unit built to provide college laboratories with desalted water. The plant has a total capacity of 9 m 3 /h and is composed of three independent lines. The aim of this study is to develop a theoretical model to predict the performance of reverse osmosis (RO) systems and to ...

Reverse osmosis in multicomponent systems
Desalination, 1968Abstract A mathematical analysis based on boundary layer theory is presented for the case of reverse osmosis in multicomponent systems. The integral method is used to solve the nonlinear convective diffusion problem. Typical results are shown for ternary systems.

Alclose reverse osmosis system
Desalination, 1977Abstract ALCLOSE REVERSE OSMOSIS (RO) system is designed for application in the area where electrocoating is used for surface treatment of aluminum products. The system recovers valuable paints for cost saving, eliminates blow-off of waste water containing high COD and BOD and renders reclaimed water suitable for rinsing in a closed system.

Electrodialysis and Reverse Osmosis as a Regeneration System for Hemofiltrate
Artificial Organs, 1983Abstract: The separation of urea from the hemofiltrate (or from spent dialysis fluid) must be considered the critical step in all regeneration systems. A promising solution for this problem is the combination of electrodialysis and reverse osmosis.

Mathematical modeling of reverse osmosis systems
Desalination, 2004Abstract The present investigation pertains to modeling of seawater desalination system. A simulation model was developed and verified for a small-scale reverse osmosis system. The proposed model combines material balances on the feed tank, membrane module andproduct tank with membrane mass transfer models.

Thermodynamics of ternary systems in reverse osmosis
Desalination, 1983Abstract Solute retention curves in binary systems are rather well predicted by the Spiegler-Kedem theory. It is shown that this theory is easily generalized to ternary systems if small Peclet numbers are involved. The thermodynamical description is extended with a special parameter due to the solute-solute interaction.
