Quantitative assessment of masticatory muscles based on skull muscle attachment areas in Carnivora

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, Volume 309, Issue 9, Page 2368-2394, September 2026.
Abstract Masticatory muscles are composed of the temporalis, masseter, and pterygoid muscles in mammals. Each muscle has a different origin on the skull and insertion on the mandible; thus, all masticatory muscles contract in different directions. Collecting in vivo data and directly measuring the masticatory muscles anatomically in various Carnivora ...

Cortical Network Overconnectivity Relates to Sensory, Cognitive, and Social Dimensions in Young Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder

open access: yesAutism Research, Volume 19, Issue 9, September 2026.
ABSTRACT The heterogeneity in both the neurobiological mechanisms and the phenotypic presentations of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) poses a major challenge to clinical and translational research. Alterations in functional connectivity (FC) have been associated with ASD, yet it remains unclear whether and how divergent brain network properties may ...

Parkinson's Disease and Respiratory Failure: Epidemiologic Insights of Two Decades From the CDC‐WONDER Database

open access: yesBrain and Behavior, Volume 16, Issue 9, September 2026.
Mortality from Parkinson's disease with respiratory failure more than doubled among US adults aged ≥65 years from 1999 to 2020, with disproportionately higher burdens among men and non‐Hispanic White individuals. Rural areas experienced a particularly steep increase in the late period, highlighting significant geographic disparities in outcomes and ...

Neural Circuit Mechanisms of Disorders of Consciousness and Potential Therapeutic Targets of Brain Stimulation

open access: yesCNS Neuroscience &Therapeutics, Volume 32, Issue 9, September 2026.
This review integrates three hierarchical frameworks—ascending reticular activating system (ARAS), mesocircuit hypothesis, and intrinsic connectivity networks (ICNs)—to update the neural mechanisms of disorders of consciousness (DoC). We highlight emerging evidence for glutamatergic ARAS pathways, a bidirectional GPi–GPe mesocircuit regulating ...

A Pilot Study Evaluating the Effect of Artesunate on Glymphatic‐Related Fluid Transport in Parkinson's Disease Mouse Models In Vivo and Ex Vivo

open access: yesCNS Neuroscience &Therapeutics, Volume 32, Issue 9, September 2026.
Artesunate (ART) treatment was associated with enhanced glymphatic CSF‐ISF exchange in both wild‐type (WT) and A53T mouse models of Parkinson's disease, with regional differences observed by dynamic MRI. In A53T mice, ART was associated with restoration of AQP4 polarization and reduced α‐syn levels in the SN.
