Contribution of Gli1+ Adventitial Stem Cells to Smooth Muscle Cells in Atherosclerosis and Vascular Injury

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Gli1+ adventitial stem cells (ASCs) have been thought to generate smooth muscle cells (SMCs) in atherosclerosis. Using a dual‐recombinase lineage tracing to exclude ectopic labeling, Wang et al. found that Gli1+ ASCs do not contribute to SMCs in atherosclerotic plaques.

Rapid rewarming after therapeutic hypothermia worsens outcome in sepsis [PDF]

open access: yesClinical and Experimental Emergency Medicine, 2014
Objective This study was performed to investigate the effect of the rewarming rate on survival and acute lung injury in sepsis. Methods Male Sprague-Dawley rats underwent cecal ligation and incision. After 1 hour of sepsis induction, normothermia (37°C±0.

Evaluating Isochoric Freezing as a Strategy for Storage of Red Blood Cells

open access: yesBiotechnology and Bioengineering, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Red blood cells (RBCs) are needed for life‐saving blood transfusions, but they undergo continuous degradation during storage. Preserving RBCs for clinical transfusion remains a challenge due to storage‐induced damage and limitations of traditional freezing methods.

Is prehospital use of active external warming dangerous for patients with accidental hypothermia: a systematic review

open access: yesScandinavian Journal of Trauma, Resuscitation and Emergency Medicine, 2020
Background Optimal prehospital management and treatment of patients with accidental hypothermia is a matter of frequent debate, with controversies usually revolving around the subject of rewarming.

Neonatal seizures: Advances in diagnosis and management

open access: yesEpilepsia Open, EarlyView.
Abstract The International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) created the ILAE Neonatal Task Force that classified neonatal seizures, defined neonatal epilepsy syndromes, and specified treatment guidelines. These frameworks, in addition to improved access to genetic testing and other recent advances, have revolutionized the diagnosis and management of ...

Limited benefit of slow rewarming after cerebral hypothermia for global cerebral ischemia in near-term fetal sheep

open access: yesJournal of Cerebral Blood Flow and Metabolism, 2018
The optimal rate of rewarming after therapeutic hypothermia for neonatal hypoxic–ischemic encephalopathy is unknown, although it is widely suggested that slow rewarming is beneficial. Some preclinical studies suggest better outcomes with slower rewarming,

Differentiating Creatine and Phosphocreatine In Vivo Using 3 T 1H MR Spectroscopy

open access: yesMagnetic Resonance in Medicine, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Purpose Validation and improvements to the proton MR spectroscopic measurement of creatine and phosphocreatine in vivo at 3 T. Methods Spectral simulations were used to evaluate and explore the mitigation of LCModel fitting bias due to lineshape, signal‐to‐noise (SNR) and non‐metabolite backgrounds with a focus on phosphocreatine and the ...

Abnormal Amplitude‐Integrated Electroencephalography and Acidosis as Key Criteria Initiating Therapeutic Hypothermia in Asphyxiated Newborns ‐ Data From the German Hypothermia Registry

open access: yesActa Paediatrica, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Aim There is a wide treatment heterogeneity for asphyxiated newborn infants between hospitals in Germany. This study aimed to identify the leading entry criteria initiating therapeutic hypothermia (TH) using data from the German Hypothermia Registry.

Rewarming rates and thermogenesis in hibernating echidnas [PDF]

open access: yesComparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part A: Molecular & Integrative Physiology, 2008
We measured body temperatures (T(b)) in 14 free-ranging echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus) using implanted data-loggers. An average of 1020+/-744 days of T(b) data was recorded from each animal. The average maximum T(b) was 35.3+/-0.7 degrees C (n=14), and the lowest T(b) was 4.7 degrees C. Detailed analysis of rewarming events from four echidnas showed
