Charge‐Induced Morphing Gels for Bioinspired Actuation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study introduces a novel electroactive actuation mechanism that enables the gel material to generate substantial and reversible shape‐changing while preserving topological and isochoric (volumetric) equivalence. The resultant morphing behaviors can mimic the movements of muscle‐driven organelles in nature, including cilia‐like beating and ...

Unified mesoscale picture of nonlinear generation of zonal flows in toroidal geometry

open access: yesNuclear Fusion
Recent experimental findings on limit-cycle-oscillations indicate that the nonlinear driving of the turbulent poloidal Reynolds stress to zonal flows (ZFs) is not a significant factor in the toroidal geometry, sparking fundamental controversial issues ...

A Numerical Study on Turbulent Couette Flow and Heat Transfer in Concentric Annuli by Means of Reynolds Stress Turbulence Model

open access: yesInternational Journal of Rotating Machinery, 1995
A numerical study is performed to investigate fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics in a concentric annulus with a slightly heated inner core moving in the flow direction and a stationary, insulated outer cylinder. Emphasis is placed on the effect

Entrainment and Turbulence Characteristics of Continuous-Flux Release Gravity Current over Rough Beds

open access: yesShanghai Jiaotong Daxue xuebao, 2021
In both the natural environment and hydraulic engineering, there widely exists the phenomenon of gravity current. In practical conditions, most beds are covered with gravel and sediment particles of different sizes, which can be regarded as rough bed ...

Triblock Polymer Engineering Enables Hydration‐Rich, High‐Performance, Fouling‐Resistant Interfaces

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A molecularly engineered triblock polymer (PHZ) rapidly reorganizes into a hydration‐rich interfacial layer on diverse surfaces, strongly suppressing hydrophobic attraction and fouling. The triblock polymer provides robust energy and steric barriers to oily foulants, enabling high‐performance antifouling at ultralow dosage.

System for measuring three fluctuating velocity components in a turbulently flowing fluid [PDF]

open access: yes, 1977
A system is described for measuring fluid velocity in a turbulently flowing fluid including a sensing apparatus for dynamically sensing the mainstream and two orthogonal cross velocity components of the fluid.

Characterization of an Injectable Poly(vinyl alcohol)‐gelatin Hydrogel for Growth Factor Delivery in an Orthopedic Application

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This work introduces photo‐crosslinkable tyraminated poly(vinyl alcohol)‐gelatin (PVA‐GT) hydrogels as tunable injectable platforms for tissue engineering and growth factor delivery applications. This schematic illustrates the two developed hydrogel formulations and the experimental workflow used to evaluate their physico‐chemical properties in vitro ...

Effect of Particle Migration on the Stress Field in Microfluidic Flows of Blood Analog Fluids at High Reynolds Numbers

open access: yesMicromachines, 2023
In the present paper, we investigate how the reductions in shear stresses and pressure losses in microfluidic gaps are directly linked to the local characteristics of cell-free layers (CFLs) at channel Reynolds numbers relevant to ventricular assist ...

The signature of the magnetorotational instability in the Reynolds and Maxwell stress tensors in accretion discs [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
The magnetorotational instability is thought to be responsible for the generation of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence that leads to enhanced outward angular momentum transport in accretion discs.

Self‐Assembled Inorganic Nanomembrane Tubes: Rolled‐Up Piezoelectrics for Microacoustic Wave‐Based Actuators and Sensors

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates a self‐assembly process to generate free‐standing piezoelectric nanomembranes, forming ultracompact microtubular acoustic wave sensors and actuators. The miniaturized 3D piezoelectric platform reported in this work can be applied in telecommunication, energy harvesting, and acoustofluidics. Moreover, the 3D self‐assembly can add
