A new catfish species of Microcambeva Costa & Bockmann, 1994 (Siluriformes: Trichomycteridae) from southern Brazil, with a redescription of M. ribeirae Costa, Lima & Bizerril, 2004

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Among the few species of Microcambeva reported as occurring in more than one hydrographic basin, M. ribeirae has been previously listed from both the Ribeira de Iguape and the Guaraqueçaba basins. However, morphological and molecular analyses revealed that the specimens from Guaraqueçaba represent a new species, which is described in this ...

Intestinal responses in pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus) exposed to fasting and refeeding nutritional management

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, Volume 309, Issue 3, Page 663-673, March 2026.
Abstract Fasting is a practice in the aquaculture industry that aims to reduce feed costs. This practice can affect the gastrointestinal system of fish. The intestine plays a pivotal role in the nutrition and overall health of fishes. The present study sought to evaluate the effects of fasting and refeeding on body weight, intestine somatic index (ISI),

Genetic variability of captive populations of Rhamdia quelen (Teleostei: Pimelodidae) using microsatellite markers

open access: yesBiotemas, 2017
The analysis of genetic variability in populations that are candidates for breeding programs is important for selecting a base population, which maximizes genetic divergence.

Integrated cultivation of sea asparagus, celery, and Southern black drum in saline clear waters and biofloc‐based aquaponics

open access: yesAgronomy Journal, Volume 118, Issue 1, January/February 2026.
Abstract Aquaponics is an alternative agricultural practice that combines aquaculture with hydroponics. It increases productivity while treating macronutrient loads on effluents. Yet, little information is available on productivity of commercial aquaponic models using saline waters, especially with biofloc technology (BFT) systems, which are ...

Tails of Biodiversity: Vertebrate Community Assessment in a Neotropical River Basin via eDNA Metabarcoding

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 8, Issue 1, January–February 2026.
This study used environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding to assess vertebrate biodiversity in headwater streams of the Rio Santo Antônio basin, southeastern Brazil, a tributary of the Rio Doce. A total of 119 vertebrate OTUs were identified, with oxidation–reduction potential emerging as the strongest environmental predictor of species richness.

Monoterpenes: Functional Additives for Reducing Antibiotics in Aquaculture

open access: yesReviews in Aquaculture, Volume 18, Issue 1, January 2026.
ABSTRACT Aquaculture is a rapidly growing industry that supplies fish for global consumption. However, the intensive production practices have resulted in disease outbreaks, largely driven by the misuse of antibiotics. Natural alternatives, such as monoterpenes, which are biocompounds derived from essential oils obtained from plants like thyme and ...

Temperatures for fertilization and hatching and their influence on determining the sex ratio of the silver catfish Rhamdia quelen =Temperatura de fertilização e incubação e sua influência na determinação da proporção sexual do jundiá, Rhamdia quelen

open access: yesActa Scientiarum: Biological Sciences, 2010
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of water temperature duringfertilization and egg incubation in the determination of the sex ratio of fingerlings of silver catfish Rhamdia quelen.

Urophysial and pituitary extracts for spawning induction in teleosts Extratos urofisário e hipofisário para indução da desova em teleósteos

open access: yesCiência Rural, 2000
Several studies have suggested that the caudal neurosecretory system could act on fish reproduction. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of urophysial extract (UE) and carp pituitary homogenate (CPH) on the induction of spawning in Hoplias ...

Practical Diets Formulated With Different Plant‐Based Energy Ingredients Modulate Nutrient Utilization and Gut Morphology in Tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum)

open access: yesAquaculture Nutrition, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Despite the increasing use of plant‐based energy ingredients in aquaculture, few studies have evaluated the digestibility of practical diets formulated with these ingredients in an integrated manner with the metabolic responses, intestinal health, and productive performance of fish. This limits the understanding of their nutritional effects. This study

Probiotic actions of Bacillus cereus var. toyoi and Saccharomyces boulardii in silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) larvae culture

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Zootecnia, 2012
The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of Bacillus cereus var. toyoi and Saccharomyces boulardii as probiotics to improve Rhamdia quelen culture. Six hundred larvaes (0.16±0.07 g) were divided in three replicate tanks (25-L recirculation, 20
