Lung‐Penetrating Biomimetic Extracellular Vesicle Spherical Nucleic Acids for Pulmonary Fibrosis Therapy Through ROS Scavenging and Anti‐Inflammatory Effects

open access: yesAggregate, EarlyView.
This work describes a biomimetic extracellular vesicle‐spherical nucleic acid (BEV‐SNA) platform for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) therapy. BEV‐SNA is composed of mechanically extruded BEVs from primary MSCs and cholesterol‐modified ssDNA that are assembled through hydrophobic interactions.

Challenges and Opportunities in Combining Ultrasound and Inductive Coupling for Energy Supply and Bidirectional Data Exchange in Bioelectronics Medicine Implant Networks

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
In this contribution, it is shown that miniaturized nerve stimulation implants can be used in collaborative networks. Inductive links and ultrasound are combined to supply these implants with energy and data; the advantages and disadvantages of each method, as well as safety risks and possibilities for improvement are discussed and the best ...

Disruption of the blood–brain barrier contributes to neurobehavioral changes observed in rheumatic heart disease

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
Sydenham's chorea (SC) is the neurological manifestation associated with acute rheumatic fever (ARF), triggered by a group A streptococcal (GAS) infection. Anti‐GAS antibodies cross‐reacting with tissue proteins are implicated in the development of neurological changes. In this study, using an animal model, we demonstrate that a compromised blood–brain

Application of Transthoracic Echocardiography for Cardiac Safety Evaluation in the Clinical Development Process of Vaccines Against Streptococcus pyogenes

open access: yesDrugs in R&D
Superficial infections with Streptococcus pyogenes (Strep A), pharyngitis and impetigo can induce acute rheumatic fever, an autoimmune sequela manifesting mostly with arthritis and rheumatic carditis.

A hepatoprotective experiment on taro vegetable (Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott) flower employing animal models by mitigating oxidative stress

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
The antioxidant efficacy of Colocasia esculenta flower’s methanolic extract was assessed using 2,2′‐azino‐bis‐(3‐ethylbenzothiazoline‐6‐sulfonic) (ABTS) and 2,2‐diphenyl‐1‐picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging assay. The hepatoprotective effect was investigated by assessing liver injury indicators (amino transferase [ALT], aspartate amino transferase [AST],

RELATIONSHIP OF TNF-A-308, IL-10–1082 GENE POLYMORPHISMS WITH THE SEVERITY AND SUSCEPTIBILITY OF RHEUMATIC HEART DISEASE IN TURKISH CHILDREN

open access: yesРоссийский кардиологический журнал, 2014
Aim. Acute rheumatic fever is an inflammatory disease developing after upper respiratory tract infection with group A streptoccoci and its most important complication is rheumatic heart disease (RHD). Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL) –1–

Noradrenergic and cholinergic innervation of the normal human heart and changes associated with cardiomyopathy

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Autonomic nerves are crucial in cardiac function and pathology. However, data on the distribution of cholinergic and noradrenergic nerves in normal and pathologic human hearts is lacking. Nonfailing donor hearts were pressure‐perfusion fixed, imaged, and dissected. Left ventricular cardiomyopathy samples were also obtained.

Rheumatic heart disease burden, trends, and inequalities in the Americas, 1990–2017: a population-based study

open access: yesThe Lancet Global Health, 2019
Summary: Background: The World Health Assembly 2018 approved a resolution on rheumatic heart disease to strengthen programmes in countries where this condition remains a substantial public health problem. We aimed to describe the regional burden, trends,
