Subterranean termites are extremely vulnerable to desiccation, and high moisture makes their habitat and food favorable for survival and colony growth. Although there is a general perception that termites can manipulate moisture, documentation is surprisingly scanty with regard to how termites transport water and the factors that impact it.

The ontogeny of soldiers in Prorhinotermes simplex (Isoptera, Rhinotermitidae)

The ontogeny of the soldier caste in Prorhinotermes simplex is studied with emphasis on the instar origin of soldiers, the duration of the presoldier stage, and changes in external anatomy during the soldier morphogenesis. The soldiers of different instar origin are compared morphometrically and by analysis of the soldier defensive secretion.

Termiticidal activity of boron dusts (Isoptera, Rhinotermitidae)

AbstractMortality of Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar) workers was evaluated 1, 2, 4, and 8 days after exposure to boron dusts. Mortality was most rapid after exposure to barium metaborate (Busan 11‐M1), followed by boric acid. Exposure to either of these two dusts resulted in 100 % mortality within 8 days.
