Neuropeptides in the regulation of Rhodnius prolixus physiology

In the kissing bug Rhodnius prolixus, events such as diuresis, antidiuresis, development and reproduction are triggered by blood feeding. Hence, these events can be accurately timed, facilitating physiological experiments. This, combined with its relatively big size, makes R. prolixus an excellent model in insect neuroendocrinological studies.

The biosynthesis of Rhodnius prolixus heme-binding protein (RHBP), which is present in the hemolymph and oocytes of Rhodnius prolixus, was investigated. Fat bodies of female insects incubated in vitro with 14C-leucine were able to synthesize and secrete 14C-RHBP to the culture medium.

Ecdysone, juvenile hormone and oögenesis in Rhodnius prolixus

Oviposition and oogenesis can be inhibited in female Rhodnius prolixus by ecdysone given by the digestive tract. The inhibition is dose-dependent, and doses higher than 4.0 ng ecdysone/mg body weight drastically reduce the size and shape of the whole ovaries.

Synthesis of vitellogenin by the follicle cells of Rhodnius prolixus
