From Nest Box to Neighborhood: Patterns of Island Biodiversity Characterized Through eDNA From Little Blue Penguin (Eudyptula minor) Nest Boxes

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 8, Issue 3, May–June 2026.
There are many environmental DNA (eDNA) sources within and around a seabird nest. These DNA traces from soil, plant material, feathers, feces, and other nest components enable detection of a wide range of taxa, including plants, fungi, insects, arachnids, mollusks, reptiles, and other vertebrates. Here, we used DNA from nest box feces to obtain signals

Impact of persistent barrier to gene flow and catastrophic events on red algae evolutionary history along the Chilean coast

open access: yesFrontiers in Genetics
Historical vicariance events, linked to the existence of stable physical barriers to gene flow, generate concordant genetic breaks in co-distributed species while stochastic processes (e.g., costal uplift) could cause species-specific genetic breaks as a

Red Algae (Rhodophyta) in Rivers

open access: yes, 2016
Freshwater red algae are presently classified into five classes based on recent molecular phylogenetic and supporting morphological analyses: Bangiophyceae, Compsopogonophyceae, Florideophyceae, Porphyridiophyceae, and Stylonematophyceae. Red algae are well represented in river ecosystems and many freshwater members occur exclusively in lotic habitats.

CONVERGENT BIOLOGICAL PROCESSES IN COALESCING RHODOPHYTA

open access: yesJournal of Phycology, 1999
Sporeling coalescence in Gracilaria chilensis Bird, McLachlan et Oliveira produces genetically polymorphic, chimeric individuals. If this is common in red algae, it may have significant biological consequences. In this study, we evaluate the hypotheses that coalescence is widespread among the Rhodophyta and that specific and convergent morphological ...

Antifouling activity of seaweed extracts from Guarujá, São Paulo, Brazil

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Oceanography, 2007
Marine biofouling historically constitutes one of the major constraints faced by mankind in its oceanic activities. The search for alternatives to TBT-based antifouling paints has led several researchers to focus efforts in the development of ...
