Physiology and metabolism of eukaryotic microalgae involved in aquatic photosymbioses

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 247, Issue 1, Page 71-89, July 2025.
Summary Symbiosis between eukaryotic microalgae and heterotrophic hosts is a widespread, phylogenetically convergent, and ecologically important phenomenon in aquatic ecosystems. Partners include taxonomically diverse microalgae interacting with multicellular or unicellular hosts in marine or freshwater environments.

Submersed Aquatic Vegetation Enhances Density and Diversity of Epifaunal Invertebrates Compared to Filamentous Mats in the Central Baltic Sea

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 6, June 2025.
This study evaluates the relative importance of Submersed Aquatic Vegetation (SAV) and filamentous mats in shaping epifaunal invertebrate communities in the central Baltic Sea. Our results showed that diversity, vertical structure, and biomass of SAV were all positively associated with higher total epifaunal abundance and greater abundance of ...

Pigment and fatty acid profiling reveal differences in epiphytic microphytes among tropical Thalassodendron ciliatum meadows

open access: yes, 2020
Tropical seagrasses support abundant and diverse epiphytic microalgae that form the base of seagrass food webs. To help better understand the influence of structural variability of tropical seagrass meadows on associated microalgal epiphytes, we ...

Hildenbrandia rivularis (Rhodophyta) in central Poland

open access: yesActa Societatis Botanicorum Poloniae, 2011
Freshwater red algae Hildenbrandia rivularis has been noted for the first time in central Poland near the Lodz agglomeration. Until now, this alga was recorded only in mountain and Polish Lowland areas. The wide range of habitat conditions influencing the occurrence for this protected species has been determined in the spring niche.
