Update of the NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase (NQO) gene family

open access: yesHuman Genomics, 2006
The NAD(P)H:quinone acceptor oxidoreductase (NQO) gene family belongs to the flavoprotein clan and, in the human genome, consists of two genes (NQO1 and NQO2).

Bacteriophage‐Induced Ribonucleotide Reductase Systems [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Biochemistry, 1974
Infection of Escherichia coli with bacteriophage T5 caused a more than 20‐fold increase in ribonucleotide reductase activity in crude cell extracts. The phage induced the formation of a new ribonucleotide reductase and a new thioredoxin. The T5‐specific ribonucleotide reductase was defined by its ability to accept the T5‐induced thioredoxin as hydrogen ...

Deoxynucleoside triphosphate (dNTP) synthesis and destruction regulate the replication of both cell and virus genomes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Biochemical reactions, even those as complex as replicating the DNA genome of cells, follow the principle that the process is regulated by both the substrate concentration and by the enzymes that mediate the process. Deoxynucleoside triphosphates (dNTPs),

Reprogramming SREBP1‐dependent lipogenesis and inflammation in high‐risk breast with licochalcone A: A novel path to cancer prevention

open access: yesInternational Journal of Cancer, EarlyView.
What's New? Endocrine drugs repurposed from treatment protocols are the primary medications available for breast cancer (BC) prevention in at‐risk women. Adverse effects, however, significantly minimize uptake and prevention impact. Here, the authors investigated licochalcone A (LicA), a non‐endocrine anti‐inflammatory agent with reported hematologic ...

The structure of Lactococcus lactis thioredoxin reductase reveals molecular features of photo-oxidative damage [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The NADPH-dependent homodimeric flavoenzyme thioredoxin reductase (TrxR) provides reducing equivalents to thioredoxin, a key regulator of various cellular redox processes. Crystal structures of photo-inactivated thioredoxin reductase (TrxR) from the Gram-

Noncanonical Nucleotides in the Genome Around the Maternal‐Zygotic Transition

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Zoology Part B: Molecular and Developmental Evolution, EarlyView.
In this paper, Kazzazi et al. provide a comprehensive review of the dynamics of nonconventional nucleotides in the genome during early developmental stages, hypothesizing a potential role for these nucleotides in the activation of the zygotic genome. ABSTRACT From the very moment of fertilization and throughout development, the cells of animal embryos ...

Lethal Mutagenesis of Picornaviruses with N-6-Modified Purine Nucleoside Analogues [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
RNA viruses exhibit extraordinarily high mutation rates during genome replication. Nonnatural ribonucleosides that can increase the mutation rate of RNA viruses by acting as ambiguous substrates during replication have been explored as antiviral agents ...

First genome sequence of a European Alternaria brassicae isolate and genes involved in early development of alternaria leaf spot on Brassica juncea

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
This article reports the first genome sequence of a UK Alternaria brassicae isolate. Dual RNA‐sequencing profiling of A. brassicae‐infected Brassica juncea leaves identified differentially expressed genes involved in pathogenicity and host response pathways in moderately resistant Sej‐2 (2) and moderately susceptible Pusa Jaikisan cultivars.

Family A DNA Polymerase Phylogeny Uncovers Diversity and Replication Gene Organization in the Virioplankton

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2018
Shotgun metagenomics, which allows for broad sampling of viral diversity, has uncovered genes that are widely distributed among virioplankton populations and show linkages to important biological features of unknown viruses. Over 25% of known dsDNA phage
