Management of False Smut Disease of Rice: A Review
Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is the most important food crop of the developing world. Among the biotic stresses of false smut is an emerging disease caused by Ustilaginoidea virens. The disease reduces both the quality and quantity of rice. The pathogen produces mycotoxins that are harmful to animals and humans.

Cytological and transcriptional dynamics analysis of host plant revealed stage-specific biological processes related to compatible rice-Ustilaginoidea virens interaction. [PDF]
Rice false smut, a fungal disease caused by Ustilaginoidea virens is becoming a severe detriment to rice production worldwide. However, little is known about the molecular response of rice to attacks by the smut pathogen.

Studies on the false smut of rice
1) The chlamydospores on the yellow, yellowish-green, greenish-yellow and green smut balls, respectively, which were collected in the preceding year and stored for eight months in the refrigerator and under the laboratory conditions, were employed for inoculation to the coleoptiles of rice variety Norin-mochi No. 1.
