Because the incidence in the US and Europe has declined rapidly, physicians in these continents have become unfamiliar with the clinical picture. Rickettsioses are obligatory notifiable diseases in Croatia. According to data from the Croatian Institute of Public Health 174 cases of Brill-Zinsser disease, recrudescent form of louse-borne epidemic typhus caused by Rickettsia prowazekii, were recorded in Croatia from 1957 to 2008.
