How should I treat severe symptomatic aortic stenosis with transcatheter aortic valve implantation in a patient with right aortic arch?

open access: yes, 2014
BACKGROUND: An 84-year-old man suffering from dyspnoea on mild exertion and a 10-year history of mitral valve replacement with a mechanical prosthesis presented to our department. The patient had an isolated right aortic arch.

A high‐fat diet with vitamin D and propylthiouracil produces a pro‐atherogenic phenotype in rats

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
Male Sprague–Dawley rats received a cholesterol‐rich high‐fat diet supplemented with vitamin D and propylthiouracil for 11 weeks. The model induced dyslipidemia (increased total cholesterol/low‐density lipoprotein, decreased triglycerides), inflammation (increased interleukin‐6 and serum amyloid A), hypercalcemia, and reduced circulating endothelial ...

A double aortic arch mimicking a right aortic arch with an aberrant subclavian artery

open access: yes, 2011
A 4-month-old boy was referred for persistent respiratory symptoms despite having undergone division of the ligamentum arteriosus for the diagnosis of a right aortic arch with an aberrant left subclavian artery.

Chrysin alleviates pressure overload–induced myocardial remodeling through regulating the PI3K/AKT/NRF2 pathway–mediated oxidative stress response

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
In this study, we primarily simulated pathological myocardial remodeling induced by transverse aortic constriction surgery and found significant cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis, characterized by deteriorated cardiac function. Oxidative stress response is considered as a pivotal pathological process, which contributes to inflammation and apoptosis of ...

Does salinity make a difference—Kidney anatomy of Saimaa (Pusa saimensis) and Baltic ringed seals (Pusa hispida botnica)

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract As habitat salinity markedly differs between the endangered, freshwater‐dwelling Saimaa ringed seal (Pusa saimensis Nordquist, 1899) and the brackish water‐inhabiting Baltic ringed seal (Pusa hispida botnica Gmelin, 1788), we investigated whether this difference has resulted in morphological changes to their kidneys.

Staged Hybrid Repairs of Acute Type A Aortic Dissection Involving the Right Aortic Arch with Retroesophageal Aortic Segment

open access: yes, 2011
IntroductionSurgery for type A aortic dissection associated with right aortic arch is complicated because of the anatomical relationship of the aorta with the trachea and oesophagus.ReportA 67-year-old man having right aortic arch with a retroesophageal ...

A critical reappraisal of the carotid sinus and carotid bulb: Distinguishing neurohistological function from vascular geometry

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
This review redefines the carotid bulb (CB) as a variable geometric dilation shaped by hemodynamics and the carotid sinus (CS) as a conserved neurohistological baroreceptor field. Distinguishing these entities clarifies a century of anatomical confusion and links geometry, neurohistology, and clinical interpretation within a unified framework ...

Right aortic arch with situs solitus

open access: yesCongenital Heart Disease, 2018
We reviewed all patients evaluated at our center with situs solitus, levocardia, and a right aortic arch that were born between January 2000 and January 2018.From our databases, we identified 204 patients. We excluded patients with a double aortic arch from analysis. Of the 204 patients, 103 (50%) were male.

Persistent Fifth Aortic Arch Associated with 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome

open access: yes, 2008
Background: Chromosome 22q 11.2 deletion is frequently associated with conotruncal malformations and aortic arch anomalies. This study investigated the association of chromosome 22q 11.2 deletion with clinical manifestations in four pediatric patients ...
