Carbon storage of headwater riparian zones in an agricultural landscape
Background In agricultural regions, streamside forests have been reduced in age and extent, or removed entirely to maximize arable cropland. Restoring and reforesting such riparian zones to mature forest, particularly along headwater streams (which ...

Moderate retention forestry creates structurally sharp forest edges that act as ecological filters, shaping orientation‐specific activity of ground‐dwelling arthropods. Using drift‐fence pitfall traps, we show that activity aligned with ecotones is more frequent than activity across forest–clearcut boundaries, particularly among detritivores.

Over the past century, drylands have undergone significant landscape transformations. Abandonment of traditional crops and pastures led to development of extensive afforestation programs with conifers, which often lacked an ecologically sound orientation,

The impact of the land use landscape pattern on river hydrochemistry has significant scale effects. It is the premise and foundation of landscape optimization and the conservation of water resources to accurately identify the core scale of the landscape ...

Extinction Debt Paid Off: The Demise of the European Polecat (Mustela putorius) in NE Iberia
We studied a vanishing polecat population for a decade, until its ultimate demise, using camera trap and roadkill data, landscape descriptors and dietary and toxicological analyses.Polecat favoured farmland and avoided forests and water bodies occupied by the invasive American mink.

Spatial Patterns of Avian Stable Isotopes Reveal Ecological Impacts of Climate and Land‐Use Change
Increased feather δ15N values with pasture coverage reveal an elevated baseline δ15N in grazing landscapes, while broader isotopic niches in farmland habitats reflect agricultural expansion's significant influence on resource use patterns of the avian community.

Life Under the Snow: Camera Trap Videos Capture Year‐Round Lemming Activity and Behavior
We developed an automated camera system capable of recording year‐round videos of lemmings beneath the snow in the High Arctic. We demonstrate the potential of this system to document lemming activity and behaviors. Our results show that it effectively monitors lemming relative abundance with temporal precision unmatched by other methods.

Concentrated flow paths in riparian buffer zones of southern Illinois
Riparian buffers in agricultural landscapes should be designed to trap pollutants in overland flow by slowing, filtering, and infiltrating surface runoff entering the buffer via sheet flow. However, observational evidence suggests that concentrated flow is prevalent from agricultural fields. Over time sediment can accumulate in riparian buffers forming

Abstract Observations of three‐dimensional (3D) coarse root system architecture remain limited because most measurement approaches require excavation. Here, we combined dense single‐ and multi‐channel 500 MHz ground‐penetrating radar (GPR) surveys with a flow‐guided connectivity framework to non‐destructively characterise the coarse root architecture ...
