Shallow Groundwater Nitrate and Breeding Bird Habitat in a Riparian Buffer Restored by Volunteer Vegetation

open access: yes, 2005
Research has indicated that riparian buffers can be effective sinks for nitrate (NO3-N) in agricultural environments, however there is uncertainty regarding specific characteristics necessary for optimal buffer performance such as buffer width and ...

Urban Bats: City Lovers or Refugees?

open access: yesEthology, EarlyView.
Hypothetical relationship between urbanisation intensity and bat species population persistence framed through a species refuge concept. Moderately urbanised landscapes may function as temporal refuge zones where habitat heterogeneity and establishment suitability allow some bat species to colonise and persist.

Reconnaissance‐Scale Methods for the Identification of Groundwater Discharge to Streams

open access: yesGroundwater Monitoring &Remediation, EarlyView.
Abstract Identifying groundwater discharge locations is critical for understanding and monitoring groundwater contributions to streams in terms of water quantity and quality. Streams and rivers are under increasing strain from factors, including increased urbanization, agricultural land use, groundwater extraction, and climate change, which can alter ...

LANDOWNER DECISION MAKING ABOUT RIPARIAN BUFFERS [PDF]

open access: yes
A two-stage model is used to examine a landowner's decision to use riparian buffers. First, the farmer chooses whether to continue farming or to sell the land for development.

Dietary selectivity mediates niche overlap and interspecific competition in a reedbed warbler community in southern Europe

open access: yesIbis, EarlyView.
Sympatric species are expected to use resources differently along one or more ecological dimensions. This can be complex when there is partial separation along multiple dimensions, such as where bird species exhibit similarities in habitat use and diet.

Colonisation processes in riparian fen vegetation

open access: yes, 2010
Fen landscapes in The Netherlands are characterised by high biodiversity. Especially the ponds that have been created by peat excavation in former centuries inhabit numerous species. Under relatively nutrient-poor conditions, those fen ponds were rapidly colonised and often, species-rich floating mats developed.

Incorporating light pollution into projections of the future distribution of Aspisoma sticticum Gemminger, 1870 under climate change in South America

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, EarlyView.
Climate‐only models predict severe habitat contractions by 2100, especially in the Amazon, Cerrado and Caatinga, while southern and coastal Atlantic Forest areas remain refugial. Including artificial light at night increased projected stability and apparent suitability gains, especially in central and eastern South America.
