Dragonfly taxonomic and functional responses to urbanized streams in southeastern Europe, with management recommendations

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, EarlyView.
Urbanization drives turnover in dragonfly species composition, traits, and habitat conservation value. Natural stream sections have a higher conservation value (higher DBI) due to presence of specialists. Properly managed urban streams can support diverse dragonfly assemblages.

Relationship between the environment and the occurrence of invasive pumpkinseed Lepomis gibbosus in lotic and lentic habitats

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract The pumpkinseed Lepomis gibbosus is a freshwater fish species native to North America. It has been introduced to Europe, where it is recognized as one of the worst aquatic invaders due to its high adaptability and invasive potential. This study aimed to determine the presence of L. gibbosus in small to medium‐sized water bodies, both lotic and

Riparian Vegetation Encroachment in Mediterranean rivers

open access: yes, 2018
The encroachment of riparian vegetation is a widespread phenomenon in most of Mediterranean rivers. The causes of this process have been linked to changes in land use, to reduction of extensive livestock, to a great demand of water for irrigation, and currently, climate change is reinforcing it.

Water temperature and river discharge drive age‐dependent changes in brown trout (Salmo trutta) growth

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Rivers and streams exhibit inherent variability in environmental conditions, particularly in water temperature and stream discharge. These factors can impact fish growth through both direct (i.e., physiological) and indirect (i.e., ecosystem productivity) mechanisms.

Ecological energetics of an imperilled fish: Physiological metrics, experimental protocols and implications for population recovery

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Insights about fish physiology can be useful for population management, but collecting ecologically relevant data can be challenging, especially for imperilled and sensitive species. With the goal of identifying ecologically relevant physiological metrics, we conducted a range of experiments to characterize the metabolism, food consumption ...

Climate‐driven niche filtering limits post‐dispersal establishment and genomic introgression in a riverine shrub

open access: yesJournal of Integrative Plant Biology, EarlyView.
Integrated biogeographic analysis and macroecological insights reveal that habitat differences drive genetic differentiation Debregeasia orientalis C. J. Chen, a dominant riparian shrub distributed across multiple biodiversity hotspots, and different lineages vary greatly in adaptability to future climate.

Repurposing Bird Bycatch From Camera Traps in Urban Landscapes: A Correlate of Avian and Mammalian Richness?

open access: yesJournal of Zoology, EarlyView.
Here, we evaluated the ecological value of bird detections obtained opportunistically from camera traps by comparing them with standardized point count surveys conducted in 2023–2024, across the metropolitan area of Firenze, central Italy, and explored their potential to indicate broader urban biodiversity patterns through cross‐taxa relationships with
