Pollinators in Blackcurrant Orchards: Complementary Roles of Sown and Spontaneous Flower Strips and Limited Spillover of Small Wild Bees Within Fields

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 9, September 2026.
Sowing flower strips and preserving spontaneous flowers are commonly recommended to support pollinators in agricultural landscapes. In nine blackcurrant orchards, these resources played complementary roles: the abundance of small and large wild bees was positively associated with spontaneous flowers, whereas hoverfly abundance was positively associated

From Data to Discovery: Characterizing the Scope and Limitations of Seedling Trait Studies in the U.S. With the EPiC Database

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 9, September 2026.
Our systematic review of 181 published studies investigated seedling traits of native grass, forb, and shrub species across diverse environmental conditions in the continental United States. We found that most studies focused on individuals younger than 90 days old, with only 24% of studies measuring seedling traits beyond this window.

Investigating Genetic Spillage in a Mimulus cardinalis (Syn. Erythranthe cardinalis) Common Garden Experiment

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 9, September 2026.
In this study, we investigated a possible spillage of genetic material from an existing common garden experiment of monkeyflower and found no evidence of the unknown population of monkeyflower to be escapees but represent a natural population in that region.

The Individual and Interactive Effects of Climate, Land Use and Nutrient Enrichment on Macroinvertebrate Dynamics in South African Rivers

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 9, September 2026.
This study uses macroinvertebrate data from 30 streams in South Africa to understand how multiple climate‐ and anthropogenic‐related stressors shape their distribution. Both single and interactive terms shaped community composition, with stressor interactions dominating responses.

Habitat Use Across the Geographic Range of Limenitis reducta Reveals Stronger Constraints at the Northern Edge

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 9, September 2026.
We compared larval habitat use of the Southern White Admiral (Limenitis reducta) between populations at the northern range edge in Germany and near the southern range edge in the Turkish Aegean region. Habitat associations with solar radiation, shading, host plant height and slope exposition differed between regions, with markedly stronger selection ...

Ecological Context Constrains Host‐Associated Genetic Structure in the Common Cuckoo

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 9, September 2026.
Host specialization is often expected to generate population genetic structure, yet this relationship remains unclear in highly mobile species. Using the common cuckoo in South Korea, we show that genetic structure is exceptionally weak across the mainland despite ecological heterogeneity and multiple host species, with differentiation emerging only ...
