On the energetics of river plume entrainment

Abstract There are fundamental differences between the mechanics of entrainment in river plumes and two-layer channel flow. Entrainment of seawater to a river plume is seen to occur predominantly in a frontal region. A simple theory for the energetics of frontal entrainment is applied to river discharge in a wide fjord with a seaward narrows.

Abstract The development, maintenance, and dissipation of river-forced estuarine plumes with and without seaward sloping bottom are studied by use of a three-dimensional, primitive-equation model. Inside the estuary, discussion is focused on how the Coriolis force induces lateral asymmetries in the circulation.

The Niagara River discharges into Lake Ontario at a typical rate of 6500 m3/s, and is the lake's principal source of suspended and dissolved materials. The discharge plume is frequently warmer and thus more buoyant than the surrounding lake surface water.
