Mixing and Transport in Coastal River Plumes
Annual Review of Fluid Mechanics, 2015River plumes are generated by the flow of buoyant river water into the coastal ocean, where they significantly influence water properties and circulation. They comprise dynamically distinct regions spanning a large range of spatial and temporal scales, each contributing to the dilution and transport of freshwater as it is carried away from the source ...

Tidal Modulation of the Fraser River Plume
Journal of Geophysical Research: OceansAbstractProperties of the Fraser River plume in the Strait of Georgia, BC, are significantly influenced by the tide. However, the dynamics and magnitude of this tidal influence on the plume area are not known. Here, we use 17 years of daily satellite observations of suspended particulate matter to understand the tidal variability of the plume area.

The bulge circulation in the Columbia River plume
Continental Shelf Research, 2009Abstract While most numerical and laboratory models of coastal river inflows result in the generation of a large anticyclonic bulge near the mouth of the river, evidence of such a feature in field observations is scant. Here, results from a series of approximately shore-parallel transects 20 km west of the mouth of the Columbia River are presented ...

Characteristics of the Great Whale River plume
Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 1981Observations of the motion field and dilution effects associated with the plume of Great Whale River in Hudson Bay are presented for both open water and ice‐covered conditions. In the summer months a distinct plume of about 100 km2 in area is formed offshore which is characterized by a 1–2 m thickness and large velocities directed away from the river ...
