A Novel Crawling Robot Based on the Hexagonal Mesh Structure and Enhanced PID Control Strategy

open access: yesJournal of Field Robotics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The locomotion of crawling robots is similar to that of caterpillars, relying on foot adhesion and body contraction to ensure flexible movement without compromising stability. However, most existing pneumatic soft crawling robots are incapable of simultaneously achieving forward, backward, turning, and climbing capabilities.

Deriving shape-based features for C. elegans locomotion using dimensionality reduction methods [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
High-throughput analysis of animal behavior is increasingly common following the advances of recording technology, leading to large high-dimensional data sets. This dimensionality can sometimes be reduced while still retaining relevant information.

Multiscale Residual Convolution Neural Network and Sector Descriptor-Based Road Detection Method

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2019
Road detection is a focus of research in the field of remote sensing image analysis. This task is normally difficult due to the complexity of the data, which are heterogeneous in appearance with large intra-class and lower inter-class variations that ...

Road Extraction From High-Resolution Satellite Images Based on Multiple Descriptors

open access: yesIEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing, 2020
Geometry and texture noise make it difficult to accurately describe road image rules, which leads to the low degree of automation of traditional template matching algorithms based on internal texture homogenization.

A Tool for Prioritizing Gravel Augmentation Reaches for Sediment Starved Rivers

open access: yesRiver Research and Applications, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Gravel augmentation is a widely used restoration technique used to improve habitat below dams, including salmonids spawning habitat. However, gravel augmentation can be cost‐prohibitive, and it is often unclear which stream segments have the highest potential to benefit spawning salmonids.

Automatic Main Road Extraction from High Resolution Satellite Imagery [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Road information is essential for automatic GIS (geographical information system) data acquisition, transportation and urban planning. Automatic road (network) detection from high resolution satellite imagery will hold great potential for significant ...

In Situ UV Torsional Force Spectroscopy for Real‐Time Mapping of Cross‐linking Kinetics and Mechanical Properties in Polymeric Films

open access: yesSmall Methods, EarlyView.
This study introduces an in situ UV torsional force spectroscopy method to track how polymers harden under UV light. The technique maps stiffness and energy loss beneath the surface in real time. It reveals how cross‐linking develops and identifies regions with different mechanical behavior, helping optimize UV curing processes in polymer materials ...

Length of the Adult Human Colon in Health and Constipation Measured Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging

open access: yesNeurogastroenterology &Motility, EarlyView.
Colon length was measured in adult healthy volunteers, people with chronic constipation, and people with IBS with constipation using MRI. Colon length is significantly longer in chronic constipation. The chronically constipated colon is unable to accommodate longitudinally in response to fluid influx from a macrogol challenge.

Shape mode analysis exposes movement patterns in biology: flagella and flatworms as case studies

open access: yes, 2014
We illustrate shape mode analysis as a simple, yet powerful technique to concisely describe complex biological shapes and their dynamics. We characterize undulatory bending waves of beating flagella and reconstruct a limit cycle of flagellar oscillations,
