Recombinant Envelope-Proteins with Mutations in the Conserved Fusion Loop Allow Specific Serological Diagnosis of Dengue-Infections [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Dengue virus (DENV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus and a major international public health concern in many tropical and sub-tropical areas worldwide. DENV is divided into four major serotypes, and infection with one serotype leads to immunity against the

Decreasing seroprevalence of herpes simplex virus type 1 and type 2 in Germany leaves many people susceptible to genital infection: time to raise awareness and enhance control

open access: yesBMC Infectious Diseases, 2017
Background Herpes simplex infections (HSV1/2) are characterized by recurrent symptoms, a risk of neonatal herpes, and the facilitation of HIV transmission. In Germany, HSV1/2 infections are not notifiable and data are scarce.

HERV-K(HML-2), the best preserved family of HERVs: endogenisation, expression and implications in health and disease

open access: yesFrontiers in Oncology, 2013
Retroviruses that have the ability to infect germ line cells can become an integral and inherited part of the host genome. About 8% of the human chromosomal DNA consists of sequences derived from infections by retroviruses that presumably circulated 2-40

A Vascular Microphysiological Model of Lung Fibrosis Reveals That Myofibroblasts and IPF Patient‐Derived Fibroblasts Impair Angiogenesis and Vasculogenesis

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A microphysiological lung fibrosis model recapitulates myofibroblast–vascular interactions. Induced myofibroblasts and patient‐derived IPF fibroblasts impair angiogenesis and increase vascular permeability via TGF‐β1–driven signaling. Pharmacological interventions with SB 431542 and VEGF supplementation restore vascular morphology and barrier function.

Periodontal microbiology and microbial etiology of periodontal diseases: Historical concepts and contemporary perspectives

open access: yesPeriodontology 2000, EarlyView., 2023
Abstract This narrative review summarizes the collective knowledge on periodontal microbiology, through a historical timeline that highlights the European contribution in the global field. The etiological concepts on periodontal disease culminate to the ecological plaque hypothesis and its dysbiosis‐centered interpretation.

Poisson regression charts for the monitoring of surveillance time series [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
This paper presents a Poisson control chart for monitoring time series of counts typically arising in the surveillance of infectious diseases. The in-control mean is assumed to be time-varying and linear on the log-scale with intercept and seasonal ...
