Dynamic Active Constraints for Surgical Robots using Vector Field Inequalities [PDF]

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Robotics, vol. 35, no. 5, pp. 1166-1185, Oct. 2019, 2019
Robotic assistance allows surgeons to perform dexterous and tremor-free procedures, but robotic aid is still underrepresented in procedures with constrained workspaces, such as deep brain neurosurgery and endonasal surgery.

Modeling of Surgical Procedures Using Statecharts for Semi-Autonomous Robotic Surgery [PDF]

open access: hybridIEEE Transactions on Medical Robotics and Bionics, 2021
In this paper we propose a new methodology to model surgical procedures that is specifically tailored to semi-autonomous robotic surgery. We propose to use a restricted version of statecharts to merge the bottom-up approach, based on data-driven techniques (e.g., machine learning), with the top-down approach based on knowledge representation techniques.

Bone-mounted miniature robot for surgical procedures: concept and clinical applications [PDF]

open access: greenIEEE Transactions on Robotics and Automation, 2003
This paper presents a new approach to robot-assisted spine and trauma surgery in which a miniature robot is directly mounted on the patient's bony structure near the surgical site. The robot is designed to operate in a semiactive mode to precisely position and orient a drill or a needle in various surgical procedures.

Objective evaluation of expert performance during human robotic surgical procedures [PDF]

open access: hybridJournal of Robotic Surgery, 2008
Robotic laparoscopic surgery has revolutionized minimally invasive surgery and has increased in popularity due to its important benefits. However, evaluation of surgical performance during human robotic laparoscopic procedures in the operating room is very limited. We previously developed quantitative measures to assess robotic surgical proficiency. In

Surgical Audio Guidance: Feasibility Check for Robotic Surgery Procedures [PDF]

open access: goldCurrent Directions in Biomedical Engineering, 2020
Abstract In robot-assisted procedures, the surgeon controls the surgical instruments from a remote console, while visually monitoring the procedure through the endoscope. There is no haptic feedback available to the surgeon, which impedes the assessment of diseased tissue and the detection of hidden structures beneath the tissue, such as
