Rock mass classification systems are the most commonly used empirical tools in preliminary design of rock slopes. In spite of numerous advantages, these systems lack the common drawbacks of classification systems originated from uncertainties. These drawbacks may lead to similar or so close quality scores for different rock mass properties.

Prediction of CMRS rock mass rating using fuzzy logic
2015 International Conference on Advances in Computer Engineering and Applications, 2015CMRS (Central Mining Research Station) Geomechanical rating of rock mass is a classification system based on the various parameters which was defined by CMRS. The rating system may possess some fuzziness in its practical applications. For example, groundwater seepage and weatherability (measured by I Cycle slake durability) are related by experts in ...

Optimal Abrasive Mass Flow Rate for Rock Erosion in AWJ Machining
2020Erosion process of the Abrasive Water Jet (AWJ) machining on a rock material depends on various parameters. A brittle rock material is removed predominantly by the deformation wear. Abrasive grains can enhance the machining since their hardness and therefore material removal is better than work of pure water.

Modification of rock mass rating system using soft computing techniques
Engineering with Computers, 2018Classification systems such as rock mass rating (RMR) are used to evaluate rock mass quality. This paper intended to evaluate RMR based on a fuzzy clustering algorithm to improve linguistic and empirical criteria for the RMR classification system. In the proposed algorithm, membership functions were first extracted for each RMR parameter based on the ...

Influence of rock mass fracturing on the net penetration rates of hard rock TBMs
Tunnelling and Underground Space Technology, 2014Abstract Penetration rates during excavation using hard rock tunnel boring machines (TBMs) are significantly influenced by the degree of fracturing of the rock mass. In the NTNU prediction model for hard rock TBM performance and costs, the rock mass fracturing factor (ks) is used to include the influence of rock mass fractures.

Modification of the rock mass rating system (RMRmbi) considering three-dimensional rock block size
Bulletin of Engineering Geology and the Environment, 2019Traditional measurements of block size (or degree of jointing), such as the rock quality designation (RQD), are questionable due to certain theoretical limitations, including orientation bias and their weakness in considering the joint persistence and three-dimensional shapes of block sizes.
