Practical nonlinear constitutive model for rockfill materials with application to rockfill dam

Computers and Geotechnics, 2020
Abstract In this paper, a nonlinear constitutive model for rockfill materials is proposed to account for the coupling influence of the mean effective stress p and the deviatoric stress q on the deformation of rockfill materials. In the model, the stress-dilatancy relationship derived from the microstructural changes of granular materials is adopted ...

The Role of Nature of Particles on the Behaviour of Rockfill Materials

open access: yesSoils and Foundations, 2006
The nature of the particles of seven alluvial rockfill materials and three quarried rockfill materials are expressed in terms of uncompacted void content and unconfined compressive strength of each of the rockfill materials. Drained triaxial tests are conducted on modeled rockfill materials.

Evaluation of Properties of Rockfill Materials

Journal of the Soil Mechanics and Foundations Division, 1972
A modeling technique has been used to determine the properties of rockfill materials. The results indicate that the mechanical properties of the field rockfill materials can be predicted with a high degree of accuracy by a series of tests with modeled rockfill materials in the laboratory. Modeling of the rockfill materials did not materially affect the

Testing and Modeling Two Rockfill Materials

Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering, 2003
Modeled rockfill materials consisting of rounded and angular particles obtained from two dam sites are subjected to drained triaxial tests using large size specimens. An elastoplastic constitutive model based on the disturbed state concept is adopted to characterize the behavior of the modeled rockfill materials.

Direct Shear Testing of Rockfill Material

Soil and Rock Behavior and Modeling, 2006
The shear strength of granular materials is mainly derived from the particle sliding friction and resistance resulting from reorientation and sample dilatancy. Parameters affecting the shear strength therefore depend on the relative density, gradation, particle strength, particle size and shape, and degree of saturation of the specimen. In this study a

Factors Influencing the Behavior of Rockfill Materials

2021
In the present experimental work, quarried rockfill material from a Lift Irrigation Project, India has been considered. The largest size of particle (dmax) of the prototype gradation rockfill material is 600 mm. Such a large size rockfill material is not possible to test in the laboratory.

Dynamic optimization of compaction process for rockfill materials

Automation in Construction, 2020
Abstract The automatic adjustment of compaction parameters during a compaction process for increased efficiency is an important part in intelligent compaction (IC). However, there is a lack of effective methods for optimizing compaction parameters.

Constitutive Model for Rockfill Materials and Determination of Material Constants

International Journal of Geomechanics, 2006
Two types of rockfill materials collected from seven sites are modeled and tested under triaxial loading. A constitutive model based on a disturbed state concept is used to characterize the behavior of modeled rockfill materials. The model is shown to provide satisfactory prediction of the observed behavior of the modeled materials.

Dynamic deformation characteristics of sands and rockfill materials

Canadian Geotechnical Journal, 1993
Cyclic torsional simple shear (CTSS) tests and cyclic triaxial (CTX) tests were carried out to investigate the dynamic deformation characteristics of sands and rockfill materials. It was found that the shear modulus and damping ratio can be expressed as a function of shear strain, void ratio, and confining stress.

Research on creep deformation of rockfill material and post-construction deformation of rockfill dam

2009
By developing a large scale stress controlled tri-axial testing machine, the creep deformation properties of rockfill material under different conditions were studied. From the laboratory test, it can be found that the creep deformation of rockfill has a direct relationship with cell pressure and stress level.
