Regeneration response to post‐disturbance forest management in Central Europe

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 8, August 2026.
As disturbance activity intensifies, forest management must identify strategies to facilitate the rapid recovery of disturbed sites. By studying 868 disturbed sites across Central Europe, we found that active post‐disturbance management significantly enhanced tree regeneration in regional disturbance hotspots.

Malaria control and chemoprophylaxis policy in the Republic of Korea Armed Forces for the previous 20 years (1997–2016)

open access: yesMalaria Journal, 2018
Background Vivax malaria reemerged along the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), Republic of Korea (ROK), in 1993. While it was hypothesized that vivax malaria would spread throughout the peninsula, nearly all cases were due to exposure near the DMZ.

Affordances, dread, and online fraud: Exploring and advancing social learning theory in online contexts

open access: yesCriminology, Volume 64, Issue 3, Page 698-733, August 2026.
Abstract We investigate how the affordances of an online context shape the processes of social learning. Using a dataset of more than 11,000 posts from the fraud subdread on the dark web forum Dread, we examine how affordances of platform governance, connectivity, anonymity, invisibility, asynchronicity, and limited oversight influence the components ...

Rethinking dosimeter assignment for military radiation safety

open access: yes선진국방연구
The increasing use of portable X-ray generators in military operations—particularly for explosive detection and counter-terrorism—has highlighted the need for a radiation safety strategy tailored to field-based, low-dose environments.

Bacterial Volatile Organic Compounds Mediate a Cooperative Relationship Between Bacteria and Plants Under Heavy Metal Stress

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 19, Issue 8, August 2026.
In this brief report, we propose a scenario in which bacterial volatile organic compound (BVOC)‐mediated communication with plants can be interpreted as a form of plant–microbe cooperation under heavy metal stress. Different VOCs are emitted depending on bacterial stress states, and VOCs from heavy metal‐stressed bacteria modulate plant defense ...

Discovery of PHB1 as a Novel Candidate Gene in Dominant Optic Atrophy

open access: yesClinical Genetics, Volume 110, Issue 2, Page 165-171, August 2026.
A heterozygous PHB1 missense variant (p.Ser147Phe) segregates with autosomal dominant optic atrophy in a multi‐generation family. Structural and cellular analyses suggest altered mitochondrial dynamics, identifying PHB1 as a novel candidate gene for hereditary optic neuropathy. ABSTRACT Hereditary optic neuropathies comprise a genetically heterogeneous

Integrated multi-endpoint hazard prioritization of unregulated industrial contaminants: A safety-first screening framework for emerging environmental threats

open access: yesEcotoxicology and Environmental Safety
The rapid expansion of the industrial chemical space has outpaced regulatory oversight, creating a critical regulatory and environmental blind spot regarding unregulated high-consequence chemicals with limited hazard characterization.

Translocation effects on regional and local population viability and connectivity

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 40, Issue 4, August 2026.
Abstract Translocations and reintroductions aim to improve the viability of isolated populations and promote connectivity for large carnivores. However, there is no established framework for assessing their success. We used the Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) in western and central Europe to assess the impact of translocations on the viability of six ...
