Rudder Roll Stabilization Based on Arc Tangent Nonlinear Feedback for Ships

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2020
The rudder is used for damping the roll motion of a ship. Study of this motion is the essence of this paper. The responses of yaw and roll motions are different as the rudder angle varies.

Roll motion on small traditional Norwegian fishing vessels [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
Roll motion is one of the six degrees of freedom and is the most difficult to predict, as roll motion is extremely sensitive to the viscous effect and induced flow separation.

NUMERICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL CALCULATION OF ROLL AMPLITUDE EFFECT ON ROLL DAMPING

open access: yesBrodogradnja, 2019
Roll motion is still a challenging problem in naval architecture and an adequate prediction of this physical phenomenon is important because of its undesirable effects such as capsizing.

The effects of local rotation on roll vection induced by globally rotating visual inducer

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2015
A visual stimulus rotating globally along an observer’s line of sight can induce the illusory perception of self-rotation in the opposite direction (roll vection).

CFD Simulation on Workability of a Seaweed Harvesting Boat Due to Wake-Wash

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2020
In the present study, a 2-ton class seaweed harvesting boat was optimized by employing a W-shape hull form to reduce roll motion due to wake-wash from passing boats.

A Numerical Method on Large Roll Motion in Beam Seas Under Intact and Damaged Conditions

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering
The second-generation intact stability criteria, including five stability failure modes, were approved by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 2020, and it is an urgent task to develop the numerical method for the significant roll motion ...

Experimental Determination of Non-Linear Roll Damping of an FPSO Pure Roll Coupled with Liquid Sloshing in Two-Row Tanks

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2020
Wave excited roll motion poses danger for moored offshore vessels such as Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) because they cannot divert to avoid bad weather.

Rolling friction and bistability of rolling motion

open access: yes, 2005
The rolling motion of a rigid cylinder on an inclined flat viscous surface is investigated and the nonlinear resistance force against rolling, $F_R(v)$, is derived. For small velocities $F_R(v)$ increases with velocity due to increasing deformation rate of the surface material.
