Stiffness‐Programmable Origami Robots With Tendon‐Driven Actuation via Multimaterial 3D Printing

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Motion diversity is achieved in a tendon‐driven origami robot through programmable stiffness rather than modified actuation. Multimaterial 3D printing embeds soft creases, modular inserts redirect identical tendon inputs into distinct behaviors, and variable‐stiffness inserts enable real‐time switching.

Weed Functional Diversity as Affected by Agroecological Service Crops and No-Till in a Mediterranean Organic Vegetable System

open access: yesPlants, 2020
This paper explores the effect of agroecological service crops (ASCs), i.e., crops included in the crop rotation for their ecosystem services, terminated with an in-line tillage roller crimper (ILRC) on weed community composition and their functional ...

Harnessing Phase Separation for the Development of High‐Performance Hydrogels

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Hydrogels are indispensable for the development of next‐generation bioelectronics, soft robotics, and biomedical devices, where their mechanical properties determine performance and reliability. Among strategies to enhance hydrogel mechanics, phase separation enables controlled heterogeneity resulting in gel networks that are reinforced by ...

A Smart Fluid‐Hydraulic System Based on MRF Valve Control and Its Application in Flexible Grasping

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study introduces a smart fluid hydraulic system using MRF valve control for flexible gripping. An MRF‐MSV with an integrated excitation coil and micro‐textured damping channels is designed and validated; micro‐texturing increases hydraulic resistance. Coupled with a soft actuator, the MRF‐MSV enables dynamic bending and grasping.

The Role of Cover Crop Types and Residue Incorporation in Improving Soil Chemical Properties

open access: yesAgronomy, 2021
Soil chemical properties can be improved by incorporating crop residues in soil and letting it decompose. This study explored the use of incorporating residues of cover crops for improvements in soil chemical properties including soil organic matter (SOM)

Stochastic Entanglement of Deterministic Origami Tentacles For Robust Robotic Grasping

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study introduces an origami tentacle gripper to robustly grasp objects‐in air, underwater, and even in orbital space‐by exploiting a synergy between local, deterministic deformation programming and global, stochastic entanglements. A single origami tentacle can be designed to coil with a simple tendon pull.

Chiral Morphing of Liquid Crystal Polymer Networks

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This paper reviews how macroscopic chirality spontaneously arises from liquid crystal polymer materials. It describes how alignment is utilized to create the mechanical anisotropy, geometric misorientation and asymmetry that leads to chiral shape morphing, how shape selection between helicoids and helices arises, the techniques used to prepare these ...

Cover crop termination method has a limited effect on spring soil moisture and temperature in humid mid-Atlantic U.S.

open access: yesAgricultural Water Management
Winter cover crop termination is commonly achieved by applying broad-spectrum herbicides, which vary in mode of action and time required to kill the cover crop. Many growers also use roller-crimpers to mechanically kill cover crops or to create a uniform

Ultrafast Chemical Pre‐Sodiation of Pseudocapacitive CaV8O20 Anodes for High‐Performance Sodium‐Ion Capacitors

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
An ultrafast (2‐minute), gas‐free chemical pre‐sodiation strategy using Na‐benzophenone is developed to compensate for initial sodium loss in calcium vanadate (CaV8O20). Driven by the Ca2+ ‘spectator effect’, the framework enables highly reversible, quasi‐zero‐strain solid‐solution sodium storage, explicitly bypassing destructive conversion reactions ...

The management of cover plant residues for cotton cropped in a no-tillage system - doi: 10.4025/actasciagron.v35i3.15294

open access: yesActa Scientiarum. Agronomy, 2013
The cutting of plant residue in no-tillage systems under certain environmental conditions becomes necessary to adequately establish and grow crops. This study aims to assess the effect on the yield of different methods of managing millet plant residue in
